The Lion King, which became one of the biggest Disney movies ever upon its release in the 1990s, has also become one of the biggest shows on Broadway and around the world. The theatre production of the popular movie is one of the most elaborate of musicals with more than 40 actors involved in each showing and a number of performances being staged around the world in various locations. The Lion King, the musical, features a Broadway show along with two separate U.S. Tours traveling to a total of 11 cities. Those cities are Baltimore, Buffalo, Chicago, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Portland, Sacramento, San Diego, San Jose, and Spokane. The Lion King also has showings in places like Hamburg, Germany, Tokyo, Japan, the United Kingdom, Sydney and Melbourne, Australia, and in the Netherlands. In 1998, the Lion King won an incredible 25 awards from a number of different associations. Among those: a Grammy for Best Show Album, a Tony and a NY Drama Critics Award for Best Musical, and awards for Best Featured Actor and Actress in a Musical. Other awards included Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Puppet Design, Best Sound Design, Best Choreography, and Best Direction of a Musical.
