Beauty and the Beast, which was released in 1991 and became one of the biggest Disney movies of all-time, is also one of the most successful shows on Broadway and around the world. Beauty and the Beast, the musical, has found success in cities like New York, London, Los Angeles, Toronto, Sydney, Tokyo, Madrid, and Sao Paulo, and has also won numerous awards. Right now, the show is being performed both on Broadway and in Japan and is still performing well. Beauty and the Beast has also recently become the sixth longest-running show in Broadway history, quite a reward in itself. The show opened on Broadway on April 18, 1994, and in its first 10 years on Broadway, there were nearly 4,200 shows for an estimated 6 million people. The current Broadway show features Steve Blanchard as the Beast, Brooke Tansley as Belle, and Grant Norman as Gaston. Beauty and the Beast, the Broadway musical, has also won awards including a Tony for Costume Design, an Olivier Award for Best Musical, and an American Theatre Wing Design Award for Costumes. The Toronto crew won Dora Awards for Best Supporting Actor, Best Music, and Best Lighting while the Stuttgart group won an Image Award for Best Director. Back in America, the Chicago cast won a Jefferson Award for Best Musical and Best Supporting Actor while the Los Angeles production took home two Ovation Awards for Best Musical and Best Supporting Actress.
