Ever the family man, Sinbad sharpened his one-of-a-kind wit by entertaining his brothers and sisters in their Benton Harbor, Michigan home. Born David Adkins on November 18, 1956, he had dreams of playing professional basketball, even earning a basketball scholarship to the University of Denver. However, a knee injury forced Sinbad off of the court and toward the pursuit of a different dream. Falling back on his knack for comedy, he set off on what he referred to as his “Poverty Tour”. During this time, he traveled around the country on a Greyhound bus, performing his comedy in hopes that one day his persistence and optimism would pay off. The tour led to seven appearances on Star Search, where he caught the eye of comedy superstar Redd Foxx. In the mid-80s, Foxx gave Sinbad his first big break, offering him a role on The New Redd Foxx Show, on which he starred as Foxx’s son. The show was short-lived; however, it did draw the attention of comedian and TV personality Bill Cosby, who later hired Sinbad as a cast member on A Different World, a spin-off of The Cosby Show. These roles, along with a simultaneous gig as host for It’s Showtime at the Apollo, accelerated Sinbad’s career as a comedian and catapulted him into the entertainment industry.
After creating his own television show, Sinbad and Friends All the Way Live… Almost, Sinbad made his movie debut as a stand-up comedian in 1989’s That’s Adequate. He followed up this performance with small roles in Necessary Roughness in 1991 and Coneheads in 1993, finally earning the lead role in 1995’s Houseguest. Sinbad found further success in 1996, starring with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Christmas hit Jingle All the Way and then performing alongside Burt Reynolds and James Coburn in the made-for TV movie The Cherokee Kid. While he found success in TV and film, Sinbad did not neglect his roots in stand-up comedy. He continued to tour the comedy circuit and made regular appearances on several stand-up specials on cable. His latest projects include the short film Leila and feature film Cuttin Da Mustard, both of which were produced and set for release in 2006.
Though his stardom has continued to grow, Sinbad has remained close to his family, hiring them to help out with his various projects. He has also used his celebrity to support several charitable causes. Sinbad has contributed both time and resources to such organizations as the Children’s Defense Fund and the Omega Boys Club, and made his voice heard in the campaign for AIDS awareness through his involvement with the 1992 video Time Out: The Truth about HIV, AIDS, & You. His down-to-earth personality and matchless sense of humor have endeared Sinbad to audiences worldwide.
