| Kentucky Derby tickets are a key part of family tradition for many fans of horse racing. So much so in fact, that aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents have and will travel hundreds if not thousands of mile to enjoy one of oldest and purely American spectacles in sports. This year on May 6, for the 132nd time, Louisville Kentucky’s Churchill Downs will play host to droves of spectators, who have come to witness what has become known as“the greatest two minutes in all of sports”.
Throughout history, the Kentucky Derby and the prognostication of who will take the Run for the Roses have given strength to the event as a staple of American sporting heritage. Sometimes overshadowed by this however, are the great events that take place during those two great minutes and more over, the superb events of the last tenth of a second. Just in the last thirty years, Churchill Downs has offered up some of the more classic moments and stories to be seen. In 1985“Spend a Buck” a Cordero ridden horse, ran away from the pack on his way to winning the Kentucky Derby. The second place horse,“Stephan’s Odyssey” came in 5 ½ lengths behind the winner, one of the largest margins in the race’s monumental history.
As grand and treasured as the Kentucky Derby is, it is however, just one piece of three part puzzle which is the Triple Crown. No other feat in the sport of horse racing carries the same honor as being awarded the Triple Crown. In 1978 “Affirmed” won the Kentucky Derby by 1 ½ lengths over an outmatched “Alydar” to capture the roses and the first jewel in the crown. Later that year, with a convincing win at the Preakness and again at Belmont, “Affirmed” became the last horse to complete the daunting feat of winning the big three horse races in the same year. With emerging contenders like“Bluegrass Cat” and“Lawyer Ron” showing signs of having the grit and minerals needed to take the big three, this maybe more than any other in recent memory will be one to watch.
Getting Kentucky Derby Tickets may not be a “To Do” on everyone’s calendars this year. But for those that know, for those who have experienced the regal settings, splendid animals, and intoxicating thunder of the Derby, nothing could keep them from returning. This year will be just like any other at Churchill Downs. It will be just the same as the last 131 Derbies. We will see the same marvelous horses with the same iron willed jockeys being gallantly cheered by the same star-eyed spectators. We will see the pageantry of the winner’s celebration and renewed hope at chasing the history of the past champions. In short on May 6th we will see the same old Kentucky Derby…and fans wouldn’t have it any other way.
