Event Information
Coming back hot off a first place finish in the Eastern Conference, Ottawa Senators tickets are flying out of box offices this season. Led by head coach Bryan Murray, the Senators are ready to ride the momentum of last year’s standings. When the team takes the ice this year at Scotiabank Place, undoubtedly they will be greeted by a packed arena of cheering fans.
In their more recent past, Ottawa has stayed at the top of standings although their trips to the playoffs have been a bit lackluster. In their eight times making the post-season they have only won four series. Their 1999-00 season saw a quick first round exit after losing in six games to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Next season saw a similar series, however this time the Senators were swept in only four games. However, the 2002 postseason came with a deeper run as Ottawa took down the Philadelphia Flyers in only five games in their first round. But the streak didn’t last long. Facing their arch-rivals, the Maple Leafs, they were once again defeated. After a tense seven game series, the Senators saw a second round exit from the playoffs. Then, in 2003, the Senators were forced to file for bankruptcy. They were able to continue their regular season as normal after some emergency financial help from the NHL. Despite their monetary problems, the Senators took home the President’s Trophy in the 2002-03 season, finishing with 113 points. The team did better than ever that season, defeating both the New York Islanders and the Philadelphia Flyers. They were within one game of making it into the Stanley Cup Final series when they fell to the New Jersey Devils. Then, in September 2003 the team was bought by the pharmaceutical magnate Eugene Melnyk. However, in the 2004 playoffs, the Senators were back to their first round exit routine, losing to the Maple Leafs for the fourth time in a four game series. In June of 2004, the team gained Bryan Murray as a head coach. When the 2006 playoffs came around, the team defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round. They were then taken down by the Buffalo Sabers in round two.
