Event Information
Although they are still rebuilding, don’t be fooled. Pittsburgh Penguins are still a hot item this hockey season. It is true that last season, the Pens finished last in the Eastern Conference, however this standing also got them second overall draft pick, Jordan Staal. Now, with a team poised for future success and led by Head Coach Michel Therrien, Pittsburgh has serious possibility for great strides.
In their early years, the Pens had a shaky start. The 1970’s saw competent offense paired with a less-than-mediocre defense that kept them from going far into a playoff run. However, all of that changed in the draft of 1984. After a last place finish, the Pens were lucky enough to get QMJHL mega-star Mario Lemieux. Lemieux proved to be a formidable asset to the Penguins, dominating on the ice and providing leadership off the ice.. Proving himself to be a truly remarkable player, he scored a goal on the first shot of his first shift in his first NHL game. After four more years out of the playoffs, Lemieux led the league in scoring in the 1988-89 season. It was then that he was finally given a supporting cast of teammates. Once the Penguins picked up defensive superstar Paul Coffey from the Edmonton Oilers and top goaltender Tom Barrasso, the team saw for the first time their real shot at a title. That year, they made it to the second round of the playoffs before losing to the Philadelphia Flyers. Then the magic happened. Pittsburgh picked up rising star Jaomir Jagr in the 1990 NHL draft. With the combination of the league’s two top scoring threats on one team, the Penguins were unstoppable. They took their first Stanley Cup that season and their second and final to date the next.
