Anaheim Ducks tickets fell just a little short of glory in 2005-06. Ducks ticket holders watched their team finish in 3rd place in the Pacific and entering the playoffs very few gave Anaheim any chance of advancing past the first round. Maybe they should have checked with the Ducks first though. In any case, the fans in Arrowhead Pond had to be happy with their Ducks tickets.
In the first round of the NHL Playoffs the Ducks lined up against the Calgary Flames. After dropping the first game, and overtime battle that ended with Calgary on top 2-1, the Ducks gave the highly favored Flames more than their money's worth. Game 2 was all Scott Niedermayer. The defenseman spent the majority of the game on the ice and eventually scored a short-handed goal that put the Ducks on top and gave them a 4-3 win to even the series with the Flames. After Game 3, Ducks ticket holders may have been shaking their heads and waiting for the inevitable axe to fall. They had, after all, just watched Calgary lay a 5-2 pasting on their heroes. But the Ducks re-grouped and pushed the Flames into overtime in Game 4 and evened the series at 2 apiece with a 3-2 win. In Game 5 the see saw battle continued as Calgary came out on top and put themselves within one win of ending the Ducks season. But surprise! A Niedermayer power play in Game 6 kept the series going and by the time Game 7 was done the Ducks had laid a 3-0 egg on Calgary to move on to the NHL's Western Conference SemiFinals.
Now fans were clamoring to get their Ducks tickets and Anaheim rewarded their loyalty by playing what may have been their best hockey of the season. The first two games were blowouts as the Ducks topped the Avalanche 5-0 in Game 1 and came back to post another 3-0 shutout in Game 2. The avalanche fought back from their scoring drought and in fact pushed Game 3 into O before falling 4-3. By that time though the Ducks had the momentum and polished off Colorado for good with a 4-1 performance in Game 4.
It all seemed too good to be true. Anaheim had now risen from 3rd place in the Pacific to put themselves into position for a chance at the Stanley Cup Finals. It seemed too good to be true and unfortunately for Ducks ticket holders it was. The Edmonton Oilers stormed out to a 3-game lead in the series and although Anaheim managed to win Game 4 the Oilers sent them packing with a 2-1 win in Game 5.
Still, if you were holding Anaheim Ducks tickets you got one heck of a ride and a lot of hope for the future. It just may be that the road to the Pacific Division crown could go through Arrowhead Pond in the 2006-07 NHL season. While the San Jose Sharks and the Dallas Stars will still be forces to contend with, Anaheim has shown the rest of the NHL that they can play with the big boys and have the toughness to grit out a win in big games. Get ready Anaheim, those Ducks tickets are gonna be tough to get when the team gets rolling in 2006.
