Ready to start a brand new season, Tampa Bay lightning tickets are a hot commodity for fans. Coming back from a short-lived play off run last season, Head Coach John Tortorella is confident that the team can go deeper this winter. In the off-season, Tampa Bay has been working on some new strategies that will give them back a taste of their 2003-04 championship season.
After a beginning filled with scandal, including connections to Japanese crime families, rumors of bankruptcy and investigations by the IRS, the Tampa Bay Lightning worked hard to build up a respectable reputation. When he lost $20 million in the 1998-99 season, owner Art Williams sold the team to Detroit Pistons owner Bill Davidson for $115 million. Anxious to turn the team around, Davidson made some major changes to management. He appointed Ron Campbell as team president, who in turn fired and hired many employees. Campbell fired Jacques Demers and replaced him with Ottawa Senators general manger Rick Dudley. In his first act as general manager, Dudley brought Vipers coach Steve Ludzik in as Tampa Bay’s new coach. However, like Demers, Ludzik was unable to rebuild the team from its previous ashes and he was replaced with John Tortorella in 2001. While the team didn’t make the playoffs, they did score more than 60 points for the first time since 1997. Then, 2002-03 became a breakout season for the Lightning. Although they had a relatively young roster, the team proved themselves early on, breaking the 90 point barrier for the first time in their entire history. It was then that they made their appearance in the playoffs against the Capitals where they advanced on to the second round. While they were unable to defeat the New Jersey Devils in the second round, they did prove themselves to be a respectable, NHL worthy team for the first time. However, it was the 2003-04 season that would etch them into history. In a huge upset in the first round of the playoffs, the Lightning defeated the New York Islanders 4-1. Advancing to the second round, Tampa Bay took down the Montreal Canadiens in four short games. Round three saw the team up against the Philadelphia Flyers, where after a grueling seven game series, the Lightning came out victorious yet again, sending them to the finals. It was there that they defeated the Calgary Flames to win their first and only Stanley Cup Championship to date.
