Coming into the 2006-07 season preparing for a comeback, Washington Capitals tickets are a sound investment for any hockey fan. Though the Capitals didn’t do the greatest in last year’s standings, finishing second to last in the Eastern Conference, they have made several big deals in the off-season. Led by Head Coach Glen Hanlon, the Caps will step out onto the ice at Verizon Center with a few new tricks that will hopefully take them further up the standings.
Added on as an expansion team in the 1974-75 season, the Caps saw numerous poor seasons before really making a name for themselves in the league. In fact, in their first season they lost 67 out of 80 games, winning only one while on the road. Finally, in 1982 two major events turned the team’s luck around. First, they hired 33-year-old David Poile as their General Manager. In turn, Poile’s first move was to make one of the biggest trades in franchise history. On September 9, he traded veterans Ryan Walter and Rick Green to the Montreal Canadians in exchange for Rod Langway, Brian Engblom, Doug Jarvis, and Craig Laughlin. With the addition of these new players, the Caps made it to the playoffs for the first time in the 1982-83 NHL season. It is arguable that this performance saved the team from being moved out of Washington. After that, the team would make the playoffs for the next fourteen years in a row; however they didn’t see a championship title. Even the addition of hockey great Jaomir Jagr in 2001 was ineffective in bringing the team to a Stanley Cup Championship.
In the off-season this year, the team has made several moves to help ensure a higher spot in standings in the 2006-07 season. Several players from last year’s season have been resigned, among them right wing Matt Bradley, left wing Ben Clymer, center Brian Sutherby, center Rico Fata, defenseman Steve Eminger, right wing Boyd Gordon, and center Kris Beech. However, one of the biggest moves made by the Caps this year has to be their venture into the free agent market. On July 1, Washington signed a four year deal worth $10 million for defenseman Brian Pothier. Even though the Capitals experience in the past with free agent defensemen has been less than great, they have high hopes for their new addition. Also coming in from the free agent market are forward Quinton Laing, left wing Pete Vandermeer, and defenseman Trevor Byrne.
