Event Information
One of the most popular teams in professional hockey, Montreal Canadiens tickets have been selling out at box offices for years, and this year is no exception. Hot off a playoff run last season, the team is back and ready for action as the new one approaches.
While the team did take a slight tumble in its more recent past, missing the playoffs three seasons straight from 1999 to 2001, they are rising back to the top now. However, this dip did cause the Molson family to put the team up for sale in 2001 where they were bought by current American owner George N. Gillett Jr. In the fall of 2001 it was announced that long time player Saku Koivu had cancer and would most likely be missing the entire season. On the contrary, Koivu came back and with the accompaniment of the surprising playing power of goaltender Jose Theodore, the team was a shoe-in for a playoff run. While the upset the Bruins in the first round, they eventually lost to the cinderella-story Carolina Hurricanes in the second round. In November of 2003, the Canadiens participated in the first outdoor game in the history of the NHL during Heritage Classic. It was at this game that the Canadiens defeated the Edmonton Oilers in front of a cord of 55,000 people and NHL attendance record. Montreal made it as the 7th seed in the playoffs where they again defeated Boston in the first round but were taken down by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the second. However, on January 13, 2006 it was decided that the team’s performance was not up to par and head coach Claude Julien was fired. Now, in this upcoming season, Guy Carbonneau will begin his first year coaching the Canadiens.
In addition to a new coach, Montreal has also picked up a few new names for their roster in the off-season. Defenseman Mike Komisarek was inked to a one-year contract, along with goaltender Yann Danis, forward Duncan Milroy, and defenseman Andrew Archer. No stranger to the free agent market, the Canadiens picked up a few there two, such as Dan Jancevski and Sergei Samsonov, who landed a two year contract. However, it won’t be all new faces this winter. The team has also resigned many of its essentials, such as forwards Chris Higgins and Alexander Perezhogin who were both brought back to the Canadiens with one-year contracts. All in all, the team is definitely looking towards a bright future when the 2006-07 season picks up.
