Even though their last season was show-stopping, Boston Bruins tickets shouldn't be counted out as a solid investment for hockey fans. Taking over for his first season this year, Head Coach Dave Lewis will be joining the team after 20 years with the prominent Detroit Red Wings where he served as a player, associate coach, assistant coach, head coach and professional scout. Coming in as the first American team ever in the NHL, the Boston Bruins have been a member of the league since 1924. As for more recent years, the Bruins have consistently proven themselves as one of hockey's great original six. Throughout the 1980's, they made the playoffs every year that decade. With a strong foundation, the team made it to the finals in 1988 although they lost in a four game series. Then again in 1990, the Bruins saw another finals run but again were disappointing with a loss to the Oilers. In 1988, 1990-92, and 1994, they defeated the Original Six rivals the Montreal Canadiens, giving them some satisfaction after a longstanding contention that had weighed in Montreal's favor. In both 1991 and 1992, the Bruins were taken down in the Conference finals by eventual Stanley Cup champs the Pittsburgh Penguins. After that, the standings seemed to roll downhill with the progression of seasons. In their 1993 season, despite picking up major talent like Adam Oates, Rick Tocchet and Jozef Stumpel, the Bruins didn't make it past the second round of the playoffs. Then, in 1997 the Bruins failed to make the playoffs. It would mark the first time in 30 years the team hadn't made the post-season, for which they set the North American major professional record for most consecutive seasons in the playoffs. The 1990's also saw a change in venues for the Bruins, moving from Boston Garden to their new home, the Fleet Center, now known as the TD Banknorth Garden.
In the off-season, the Bruins have been working on some strategies to try and rebuild the powerhouse they once were. Bruins' General Manager Peter Chiarelli picked up three new unrestricted free agents, defensemen Wade Brookbank and Jason York along with left wing Jeff Hoggan. Also being brought into the mix is newly signed right wing Shean Donovan, who freely admits to being a huge Boston fan since his childhood. However, the team isn't only focused on the free market. For example, the Bruins have also signed on Detroit Red Wings' center Mark Mowers to the roster. When asked about the new additions to the team this season, Bruins forward Wayne Primeau answered, "It's great to see they picked up some new guys. I'm glad the new players chose Boston over a couple other teams that were in the mix. We look great on paper, so hopefully everything will fall into place on the ice as well."
