With a last place finish in last year’s Western Conference, the St. Louis Blues have some major rebuilding to do in the off-season. However, it is the moves made this summer that have St. Louis Blues ticket holder returning to Savvis Center this winter. Formed in 1967, the Blues have yet to take home a Stanley Cup championship. But, that doesn’t keep fans from showing up for an exciting hockey game.
In their more recent seasons, the Blues seem to slide up and down in the standings. Through the 1990’s, general manager Ron Caron inked big names such as Brett Hull, Adam Oats, and Curtis Joseph onto the team’s roster. While the team continued to make it into the second round of the playoffs, the still weren’t really seen a major competitor in the league. However, renowned names and post-season runs kept the spirit alive in St. Louis when it came to investors. In 1994, a group of nineteen companies decided to get together, buy the team and build them an entirely new arena, which is where they now reside.
In attempt to remove the barrier that seemed to keep the Blues from making it past the second round of the playoffs, head coach Mike Keenan was brought in. Keenan was known as the “playoff coach” and fans and management were confident that he could get the Blues to a championship. After he was brought it, Keenan made some extreme changes, such as trading out fan favorites Brendan Shanahan and Curtis Joseph. He also brought in an aging Wayne Gretzky. However, even with all the expectations placed on him, Keenan didn’t live up to his prophecy. In 1995 the team took a first round exit out of the playoffs and 1996 saw another second round leave. After that, he lost support both in fans and in owners and was fired. Although the Blues retain their reputation for mediocrity, they did however make it to the playoffs every year from 1980 to 2004, the longest streak in North American professional sports at the time. But unstable ownership and a lack of major talent in the 2005-06 season resulted in their worst record in 27 years. The team missed the playoffs for only the fourth time in the history of their franchise.
