Event Information
Compared to most teams in the NHL, the Columbus Blue Jackets are a relatively new franchise. However, Columbus Blue Jackets ticket holders will tell you that this baby has already managed to make a name for itself in the standings and in the minds of hockey fans. Led by coach Dave King, the team first took the ice in Nationwide Arena back in 2000. In their short time with the league, the team has had an eventful, though somewhat tragic run. However, the Blue Jackets have come back resiliently, earning a top spot in the NHL.
Kicking off their history in the 2000-01 season, the Blue Jackets got off to a disappointing start, finishing in last place in the Central Division. Even though their year was less than outstanding, the team was still able to finish out a respectable season. Their goalie, Ron Tugnutt set a record that year for most wins by a goalie. Although it wasn’t the best run, it was their next season that continues to haunt them through their time in the NHL. In the 2001-02 season, the team once again took a last place finish. However, this was the best of their problems. While before the Blue Jackets at least finished with a decent record despite their last place finish, this season saw a whole fourteen points less than the last. On top of that, tragedy struck Nationwide Arena during a game against the Calgary Flames. While attending a game for her thirteenth birthday, Brittanie Cecil was struck by a rouge puck in the head. As a result, Brittanie died two days later in March of 2002. This disaster went down as the first fan fatality in the NHL’s eighty-five year history. After this incident, the NHL issued a must for netting around all offensive zones in every arena during hockey games. In remembrance of Brittanie, the team wore heart-shaped decals etched with her initial on their uniforms during each game.
Try as they might, the team didn’t see any big leaps in the standings during their 2005-06 season. With a thirteenth place finish in the Western Conference, the team now makes attempts for a shift in performance with changes to both the player roster and coaching staff. Coming in this season is goaltender Ty Conklin from Edmonton Oilers and Tomas Kloucek from the AHL’s Chicago Wolves. Fan’s are gushing over both of these additions, especially their new goalie who has spent time playing for Team USA. Aside from players, Gary Agnew has been added to the coaching staff as assistant coach. Meanwhile, assistant coach Denis Blais has taken a new role with club, working more with player development. In addition to these changes, goaltending coach Rick Wamsley has left completely, now working for the St. Louis Blues.
