Montreal Canadiens Team Info

One of the most popular teams in professional hockey, Canadiens seats have been selling out at box offices for years, and this year is no exception. Hot off a run last season, the team is back and ready for action as the new one approaches.

While the team did take a slight tumble in its more recent past, missing the playoffs three seasons straight from 1999 to 2001, they are rising back to the top now. However, this dip did cause the Molson family to put the team up for sale in 2001 where they were bought by current American owner George N. Gillett Jr. In the fall of 2001 it was announced that long time player Saku Koivu had cancer and would most likely be missing the entire season. On the contrary, Koivu came back and with the accompaniment of the surprising playing power of goaltender Jose Theodore, the team was a shoe-in for a run. While they won the first round, they eventually lost in the second round. In November of 2003, the Canadiens participated in the first outdoor game in the history of the NHL during Heritage Classic. It was at this game that the Canadiens defeated their rivals in front of a cord of 55,000 people – a league attendance record. On January 13, 2006 it was decided that the team’s performance was not up to par and head coach Claude Julien was fired. Now, in this upcoming season, Guy Carbonneau will begin his first year coaching the Canadiens.
