Team Information
The times are changing for fans with Minnesota Vikings tickets and that news should come as relief for Viking fans that have suffered through trauma after trauma in the last few seasons. To begin with, Vikings owner Zygi Wilf brought in a new head coach to pick up the pieces and install a sense of order in the franchise. Brad Childress comes to the Vikings by way of Philadelphia where he served as offensive coordinator under Andy Reid. That experience should serve him well in rebuilding a Minnesota franchise that was left in shambles. For the fans that treasure their Vikings tickets and pack the Metrodome every home game, the changes will be obvious and appreciated.
The first thing Childress did was clean house and populate the roster with a bevy of new faces. Coming from Seattle is guard Steve Hutchison. Philadelphia yielded another quality guard in Artis Hicks. At running back, Chester Taylor, longtime backup to Jamal Lewis will be paired with new fullback Tony Richardson. And on defense, linebacker Ben Leber and safety Tank Williams will help revitalize an underachieving squad.
But don’t get the idea that the Vikings were a bad team in 2005. Despite the endless distractions that occurred under Mike Tice, the Vikings still posted a winning season, going 9-7. The new additions only strengthen an already good football team, perhaps elevating them into contention for an NFC North title and a shot at the NFL Playoffs.
The most obvious change of course will be at quarterback. Shortly after arriving in Minnesota, Childress realized that Daunte Culpepper no longer fit the team’s needs. Wanting to avoid the distractions of a bad attitude he witnessed firsthand with T.O., Childress traded Culpepper and placed his offense into the capable hands of 38 year old Brad Johnson. Johnson, whose strongest assets are accuracy, patience, and leadership, is the perfect choice for a team badly in need of stability. As insurance, Childress brought along former Philadelphia QB Mike McMahon to be the backup. Long term, the Vikings are looking to Tarvaris Jackson, drafted in the second round out of Alabama State, to develop into the strong-armed weapon of the future.
At running back, Taylor fits the mold of a West Coast runner. He can run inside and has soft hands, making him versatile enough to be a receiving threat out of the backfield. Wide receiver is still up for grabs. Koren Robinson is the likely choice to be #1. Robinson is an elusive runner, making the 2005 Pro Bowl as a kick returner. Troy Williamson, the Vikings 1st round draft choice in 2005, is expected to elevate his game in his second year, while Travis Taylor acts as a possession receiver.
While few new head coaches can be expected to carry their team to the playoffs in their first year, Vikings ticket holders may be one of the lucky few to see that happen. Green Bay and Detroit both have new coaching staffs but are starting way behind the Vikings. Minnesota has done a very good job of adding talent to a roster that was well stocked to begin with. And just shedding themselves of bad eggs and distractions should make the Vikings a better team. While it may be too much to ask for an NFC North title in 2006, especially with the Bears returning a powerful squad, it’s not out of the question to be talking NFL Playoffs for Minnesota. In any case, it’s a big relief for Minnesota football fans just to shed the weight of last year. Under the new regime, Minnesota Vikings tickets and fun in the Metrodome are just too much too pass up.
