The first indication that Seattle was still in good shape came in the form of the re-signing of running back Shaun Alexander. The loss of Steve Hutchinson on the offensive line and Hasselbeck’s safety valve Joe Jurevicius may hurt. But that problem could resolve itself if Nate Burleson, signed as a free agent from Minnesota pans out and Floyd Womack does an adequate job replacing Hutchison. Anyway, Holmgren doesn’t seem worried.
On defense the Seahawks will be improved. The Seahawks led the NFL in sacks in 2005 despite some doubts about the defensive line early on. Grant Winstrom and Bryce Fisher at defensive end gives Seattle a dependable rush while Rocky Bernard is a run stopper in the middle. By signing Julian Peterson away from the 49ers, the Seahawks now have a linebacker who can both rush the passer and cover receivers. With Lofa Tatupa, who went to the Pro Bowl as a rookie, and Leroy Hill boasting 7.5 sacks, the Seahawks are set at linebacker for a long time.
