Green Bay Packers tickets will be something to remember for years to come as the 2006 NFL season unfolds. There are two reasons to back up this idea. First, this could very well be the last season Brett Favre trots onto the field at Lambeau. Secondly, it could very well be the year that new head coach Mike McCarthy ends the Packers long decline and starts a new era of winning Packer football. Both are real possibilities and 2006 Green Bay Packers tickets may end up framed on many a wall in Titletown.
Is this Brett Favre’s last hurrah? That depends on what happens during the season. While Favre has certainly seen the erosion of time reduce his talent, he’s still a fiery competitor. And while time eats away at physical ability it also adds to experience and calm under pressure, something Favre possessed in abundance anyway. Remember, this is a quarterback that’s working on extending a streak of 221 consecutive starts, something unheard of in the NFL and an accomplishment that many doubt will ever be surpassed.
If any coach brings an offense geared to Favre’s talents, it’s Mike McCarthy. The former offensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers runs a West Coast offense that’s true to its design. Using the short pass and making effective use of the tight end to spread the defense, while also giving receivers the chance to turn short darts into long runs, is key, and Favre should fit nicely into the scheme. Wide receiver Donald Driver, who quietly went about putting together a solid season in the Packers 4-12 campaign in 2005, should also plug right in. Driver amassed 86 receptions and 1,221 yards in 2005 and don’t be surprised if those numbers go up in 2006. McCarthy added free agent Marc Boergiter to the mix, giving Favre a huge target at 6’ 3”, and a guy who has the speed to make yardage after the catch. While Bubba Frank is the big name at tight end, expect Donald to be the leader at tight end in 2006.
At running back, Packers ticket holders will enjoy the return of Ahman Green from injury. But Green’s absence in 2005 opened the door for an unlikely hero who will play a larger role in the new regime. Samkon Gado, who didn’t even start in college, was pressed into service last year and responded with a great performance. Gado piled up three 100 yard games, including a 171 yard game against Detroit, when thrust into a starting role. The biggest change in the Packers running game may be the new blocking scheme installed by offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski. After watching the Falcons lead the league in rushing for two straight years under Jagodzinski’s guidance, the Green Bay O-line is ready to listen.
