Team Information
If you’ve been buying Detroit Lions tickets for the last few decades you probably deserve NFL Playoff tickets more than any fan in the nation. In 2006 you’ll be looking at another rebuilding Lions team. But before you say “Ho Hum, here we go again” take a minute to look at what’s actually happening to the team that mans Ford Field.
First of all new head coach Rod Marinelli spent 10 years as a defensive coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. During that time Marinelli was instrumental in developing Warren Sapp and Simeon Rice into Pro Bowl caliber players. He was also pursued heavily by Lovie Smith who wanted him to be defensive coordinator for the NFL’s best defense in Chicago. So the guy is well respected and has the credentials to get the job done.
Marinelli is also smart enough to surround himself with good assistants. On defense he tabbed ex-Jets defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson to help rebuild a defense that’s been pretty much awful despite having good talent. Between Marinelli and Henderson, the Lions will finally have what they’ve been lacking: Discipline. This is a no nonsense coaching staff that’s going to be demanding and expect players to buy into the system 100%. If not, they won’t have any qualms about saying goodbye to underachievers. That’s good news for Lions ticket holders who are tired of millionaire slackers.
But the true stroke of genius was getting Mike Martz to take over as offensive coordinator. Martz is widely hailed as an offensive genius. The quirky and fiery former head coach of the Rams won a Super Bowl in St. Louis and designed the NFL’s most productive offense known around the league as “The Greatest Show on Turf.” Just having Martz on staff should upgrade the Lions firepower immensely.
Who’ll sling the ball in Martz’s system? The battle is on now that Joey Harrington was released. Jon Kitna and Josh McCown are the leading contenders. Kitna was a starter in Cincinnati as was McCown in Arizona. Although both were benched in favor of more promising players, either one is capable of providing better leadership than the erratic Harrington. Martz will be looking for a QB that can master his system of short accurate passes mixed in with the longer throw downfield. And the Lions have the potential talent to an explosive group.
Fielding three former #1 draft choices at the receiver position in Roy Williams, Mike Williams, and Charles Rogers, the Lions passing game has suffered more from underachievement than a lack of talent. Martz should change that pretty quickly. Martz is also singing the praise of running back Kevin Jones. Jones is a tailback that can be a pounding, bruising runner one play, and then come out of the backfield as a receiver the next. In other words, Kevin Jones could easily become the next Marshal Faulk in this offense.
Detroit Lions tickets may become the hottest thing in the Motor City over the next few months. The long suffering Lions fans have been aching for a winner and Rod Marinelli is in a good position to give them what they want. An NFL Playoff game at Ford Field? It’s a real possibility in the 2006 NFL season. But don’t get caught by surprise. Enjoy the new air of optimism at Ford Field by getting your Detroit Lions tickets well ahead of time.
