Well-respected head coach Jack Del Rio has compiled a roster bubbling over with blossoming superstars on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Byron Leftwich, when healthy, is one of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL. He’s got a whole stable of thoroughbreds to deliver the football to, including freakishly good wide out Matt Jones.
The Jaguars’ top pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, Jones made an instant transition from his college days, during which he played quarterback for the Arkansas Razorbacks. His unbelievable talent was evident each time he touched the ball during his rookie campaign. Those touches will be increasing, as Jones continues to mature into one of the NFL’s top young playmakers.
But he is only one of the potent weapons Leftwich has at his disposal. Wide out Reggie Williams, the Jags’ No. 1 pick in 2004, has the size and speed to help lessen the blow felt by Jaguars ticket holders with veteran receiver Jimmy Smith’s retirement. This year’s first-round pick, UCLA tight end Mercedes Lewis, is an added bonus.
The Jags’ running game isn’t too shabby either. Veteran Fred Taylor is underrated but needs to stay healthy. He led Jacksonville with 787 yards rushing last season, despite playing in only 11 games. Third-year running back Greg Jones filled in admirably when Taylor was out. The powerful runner out of Florida State rushed for 575 yards and four touchdowns in a reserve role. As his carries increase, the sky’s the limit for Jones. Del Rio added some insurance in the second round of this year’s NFL Draft by snatching up another UCLA Bruin in Maurice Drew. One of the most productive backs to come out of UCLA since DeShaun Foster, Drew is shiftier than Taylor and Jones and should be the perfect compliment to the Jags’ running game.
But the Jaguars’ ticket to Miami’s Dolphins’ Stadium, site of Super Bowl XLI, is the defense. And, just like the offense, it’s loaded with rising superstars. John Henderson and Marcus Stroud bolster the NFL’s best defensive line. The bulky tackles are masters of clogging up the middle and playing havoc on opposing offenses. They combined for more than 120 tackles and four sacks last season. With Henderson and Stroud plugging up the middle, outside linebacker Mike Peterson and All-Pro safety Donovan Darius are free to clean up on the outside.
Jacksonville is bubbling over with talent and won’t sneak up on anyone during the 2006 NFL season. Any number of Jaguars could experience breakout years. And the team could follow suit.
