Don’t toss your Kansas City Chiefs tickets yet. There’s good reason for K.C. not being a playoff participant since 2003 and change is on the way. For three consecutive years, the Chiefs have featured one of the NFL’s most explosive offenses. With players like Priest Holmes, Trent Green, Tony Gonzalez and, most recently, Larry Johnson, Kansas City has spent time lighting up scoreboards across the league. Seeing the Chiefs walk into your favorite squad’s home stadium likely kept you up the night before. But a visit by Kansas City wasn’t all bad news.
While the Chiefs offense was spectacular, the defense left much to be desired. The lack of D in K.C. had a disastrous impact at Arrowhead Stadium. Despite Pro Bowl performances from the steady and underrated Green, the explosive Holmes and fan-favorite Gonzalez, the Chiefs stayed home for the holidays, missing the playoffs for two consecutive seasons. The entire NFL knows the Chiefs’ ticket back to the playoffs is defense. Enter head coach Herman Williams, who is being hailed as the“Problem Solver” in Kansas City.
Edwards spent the last five years transforming the New York Jets into one of the top defenses in the NFL. Much like his predecessor in Kansas City, Dick Vermiel, Edwards brings an emotional intensity to the Chiefs. Players simply play hard for Edwards, and that will pay huge dividends in Kansas City.
Defensive end Jared Allen will be a big part of the Chiefs’ defensive revival. Allen and his running mate, left defensive end Eric Hicks, tortured quarterbacks last season. Allen, in only second year out of Kansas State, collected 11 of the dynamic duo’s 15 sacks. Second-year linebacker Derrick Johnson, the Chiefs’ 2005 No. 1 Draft pick, was among the team leaders in tackles in his rookie year. Those two rising superstars will be the Chiefs’ ticket back to the NFL Playoffs.
Although the defense will be improved, it won’t need to be perfect. The Chiefs’ offense can still put up points in bunches, especially now that Johnson has come into his own. After being taken in the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft out of Penn State, Johnson waited his turn, while Holmes was experiencing three consecutive record-breaking seasons. But when Holmes went down early last year, Johnson stepped to the forefront.
He rushed for more than 1,700 yards and 20 touchdowns despite splitting carries with Holmes early in the year. Johnson finished the 2005 NFL season on a tear. He averaged more than five yards per carry and scored 11 touchdowns in his last five games. But even that kind of explosive performance wasn’t enough to earn the Chiefs a playoff berth.
Vermeil’s final season would end in tears. The Chiefs won five of their last seven games to end the season, but would come up short of the playoffs with a 10-6 record. That’s how tough the AFC is these days. Ten wins do not guarantee a playoff spot, especially with a brutal schedule that features showdowns against Cincinnati, Seattle, Miami, and Baltimore to go along with games against division rivals Denver, San Diego and the hated Oakland Raiders. With Edwards to direct the defense, this could be a banner season at Arrowhead Stadium. So lock down your Kansas City Chiefs tickets today. |
