A vacation to always-sunny San Diego isn't a vacation without San Diego Chargers tickets. Beautiful Qualcomm Stadium will once again be the place to catch a Super Bowl contender, one loaded with some of the NFL's biggest stars. LaDainian Tomlinson has become the NFL's top running back. Mammoth tight end Antonio Gates has followed suit, and is the league's top pass catching big man. And, defensively, linebacker Shawne Merriman has drawn comparisons to the great Lawrence Taylor. With all this talent, there's no reason head coach Marty Schottenheimer can't punch the Chargers' ticket to Miami's Dolphins Stadium, site of Super Bowl XL.
The Chargers struck gold when they traded with the Atlanta Falcons in the 2001 NFL Draft. Atlanta moved up to the No. 1 spot to take quarterback Michael Vick. The Chargers dropped down to No. 5, where they scooped up Tomlinson. What a move it has turned out to be. The former TCU Horn Frog has rushed for more than 1,200 yards and caught at least 50 passes in each of five seasons in the NFL.
While big things were expected out of Tomlinson immediately, Gates flew under the NFL radar coming out of Kent State, where he played basketball not football. In college, Gates led Kent State to with in a game of the Final Four at the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. It didn't take him long to make the adjustment from the round ball to the pigskin, though. In 2005, Gates hauled in career highs in receptions and yards. He's scored 23 touchdowns in his last two seasons. He's cashed his Pro Bowl ticket the last two seasons and has developed into one of the NFL's best tight ends.
At 6-foot-4, 260-pounds, Gates is a nightmare match-up for linebackers who dare try to cover him. He's mastered the art of using his wide body and boxing out skills to hold off helpless defenders. Luckily for Merriman, he's on the same team. But don't think the ultra-talented Merriman would shy away from such an assignment. The Chargers struck gold again in the 2005 NFL Draft, stealing Merriman with the 12th pick. The former Maryland Terrapin was a force coming off the corner in his rookie campaign. He picked a cool 10 sacks and became one of the NFL's most feared pass rushers in his first year.
The 2006 NFL season is stacking up to be a banner year at San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium. The AFC West is one of the NFL's toughest conferences. The Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders will each have to be dealt with. The Chargers' non-divisional schedule is no easier. San Diego must face both of last year's Super Bowl participants, the defending champion Pittsburgh Steelers and the Seattle Seahawks. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers visit Qualcomm Stadium on Oct. 8, and the Chargers head north to Seattle on Christmas Eve. But no matter who's in town, with balmy temperatures and sunny skies year round, NFL football fans all over should invest in San Diego Chargers tickets.
