Team Information
When boisterous, All-Pro wide receiver Chad Johnson talks, NFL fans with Cincinnati Bengals tickets listen. The Bengals are Super Bowl contenders, according to Johnson. If quarterback Carson Palmer hadn't torn up his knee early in last year's playoff game with Pittsburgh, Johnson believes the Bengals would have been playing in Super Bowl XL at Detroit's Ford Field. Instead, the AFC North division rival Steelers were the ones celebrating in Motown, much to Cincinnati head coach Marvin Lewis' displeasure. Lewis, now in his third year as the Bengals' sideline general, brought respect back to Paul Brown Stadium, after more than a decade of utter ineptitude in Cincinnati. Johnson has been a big part of the transformation and has his mind set on cashing the Bengals' ticket to Miami's Dolphins Stadium, site of Super Bowl XL.
If that kind of season is going to occur around Paul Brown Stadium, Palmer is going to have to return to his form before suffering the devastating knee injury. The 2002 Heisman Trophy winner, Palmer took the NFL by storm in second full season as the starter in Cincinnati. The former USC Trojan experienced a breakout season in 2005. Completing almost 70 percent of his passes, Palmer threw for more than 3,800 yards and 32 touchdowns.
A lot of Palmer's 345 completions went to Johnson, a team-high 97 to be exact. In his sixth season out of Oregon State, Johnson has emerged as one of the NFL's most electric playmakers. His touchdown catches are usually followed by creative dances, often drawing fines from the NFL. But Johnson's not going to stop dancing or talking. He's one of the most outspoken players in the league and is promising a Bengals' march to the NFL Playoffs this year. He'll have plenty of help, with underrated running back Rudi Johnson and wide out T.J. Houshmandzadeh returning to Paul Brown Stadium.
Despite all the offensive firepower, Lewis knows the Bengals' ticket to the Super Bowl is an improved defense. During his tenure in Cincinnati, the former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator has compiled some rising, young defensive superstars like linebacker Odell Thurman and David Pollack.
The Bengals will need every bit of their talent, if there are going to be able to navigate through a brutal schedule. Along with having to face the defending champion Steelers twice, Cincinnati faces the Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts during the 2006 NFL season. The Bengals will have dates with six teams that were in the last year's playoffs.
