San Francisco 49ers Team Info

The 49ers carry a great history, evoking the memory of NFL greats like Joe Montana and Steve Young. The onus is on Alex Smith to carry on that great tradition and head coach Mike Nolan has been actively revamping the roster to give Smith the tools necessary to do the job. Nolan has cleaned house to the extent that only six players remain on the roster from the team he inherited after the 2004 season. The massive overhaul points to a franchise that should be vastly improved over the 4-12 unit of 2005, giving Bay area fans a host of reasons to enjoy their games this year.

One of the bright spots on the 49ers has been the emergence of running back Frank Gore. As a backup to Kevan Barlow Gore averaged 4.8 yards a carry, rushing 127 times for 608 yards. Barlow will have to work hard to keep his starting position but the combination of the two offers the 49ers to put a pair of running backs on the field that carry very different running styles. Barlow has quick feet and likes to finesse his way through the line. Gore is more of a power runner, hitting the hole hard and bulling his way through. Regardless of which back earns the starting position both will see plenty of action and give 49ers fans plenty of reason to cheer.

In 2011 49ers are offering a chance to see a team that could surprise a lot of people in the NFC West. The Rams are rebuilding, the Seahawks may be suffering the effects of their Super Bowl loss, and Arizona has been a chronic underachiever. The opportunity is there for the 49ers to make a statement. Will the 49ers make a step up?
