Team Information
One of the Pac 10’s rising programs, Washington State has turned over the reigns to a proven coach, who promises to have the Cougars headed in the right directions before heading off to the land of retirement.
Washington State Cougars basketball tickets are hot items as crafty Head Coach Dick Bennett, one of the most respected minds in the game, returns this program to prominence and re-energizes Friel Court. Bennett's teams are fun to watch but miserable to play against, as Pac-10 opponents are finding out. The Cougars wield the best defense in the conference and regularly hold teams under 60 points a game. At the same time, the Cougars drill three-pointers from sharpshooter Josh Akognon and get balanced scoring from Derrick Low, Robbie Cowgill and Kyle Weaver.
Washington State Cougars basketball tickets are going fast as this team builds on a glorious tradition. The 1940-41 season is perhaps the most memorable, as the Cougars went 26-6 and finished as NCAA runners-up. That team was coached by the legendary Jack Friel, for whom the Cougars' court is now named. Paul Lindemann and Ray Sundquist sparked the team during that magical season, and both were named to the all-conference team.
More recently, WSU went 20-10 in 1994 and earned an NCAA Tournament berth, but lost in the opening round to Boston College. But the Cougars had fallen on hard times until Dick Bennett became the school's 15th head coach on March 29, 2003. Bennett has a proven track record as a turnaround artist, and he delivered results immediately. Washington State won 13 games his first season, the most since 1996-97 and a six-win improvement over 2002-03. WSU also won seven Pac-10 games after winning just seven of their previous 50 conference games before Bennett's arrival. Bennett made the biggest difference on the defensive side of the floor as the Cougars held opponents to 59.7 points per game, a dramatic improvement of 19.1 points from 2002-03. No conference team had recorded such a major improvement from one year to the next. Bennett's first season also included a landmark win at UCLA, the first time the Cougars had won at Pauley Pavilion in 47 tries.
Progress continued last season as WSU went a very respectable 12-16. This season is the breakthrough year as Bennett continues his masterful teaching. In 25-plus years at the college level, Bennett compiled a winning percentage well over .600. At Wisconsin, Bennett guided the Badgers to three NCAA Tournament appearances and a 2000 Final Four berth. Cougars fans sense that similar success is at hand in Pullman. Already WSU has recorded several monumental victories, over UCLA, USC, Stanford, California and Arizona. Traditional Pac-10 powers no longer enjoy visiting Pullman. Cougars fans, however, are loving the ride. Friel Court is rocking again. Get your Washington State Cougars basketball tickets now.
