Team Information
Virginia Tech exploded in the ACC last season with a renewed fervor that delighted and surprised the nation. The 2005 ACC Coach of the Year, Seth Greenberg, who was brought in to revive the Hokies two years ago has packed arenas. The fierce competition became second nature to Virginia Tech in the 2004-05 season as they worked their way up to placing 4th in the ACC. The upward momentum is making Hokies tickets one of the hottest tickets un the ACC.
The Hokies are expected to carry their momentum into the 2005-06 season with a solid set of returning starters once again ready to take over the court. Zabian Dowdell, Coleman Collins, Deron Washington and Jamon Gordon have made a name for themselves over the years as collegiate power players. Dowdell and Gordon cemented that reputation last season as Dowdell became an awesome offensive threat and earned an honorable mention in all-conference status. Gordon rounded out the duo with impressive displays of his defensive talent and became one of the ACC’s best all-around players and selected for an all-defensive team. Dowdell and Gordon enter the 2005-06 season as well-respected league leaders in nearly every category. Collins played hurt during the non-conference games last season, ending in a foot surgery late in the season. Fully healed and ready to take on the 2005-06 competition, he is one of the key players to support the Hokie’s team foundation. The last returning starter, Deron Washington, made headlines last season as an explosive freshman constantly asked to play out of position as a power-forward facing the best of the nation. Instead of buckling under the pressure, Washington thrived and has grown into one of Virginia Tech’s most impressive athletes and one of the ACC’s greatest freshman-class surprises.
Of course one can’t mention the Hokies without talking about Markus Sailes. He started every single one of the 29 games in his 2003-04 season before ending his 2004-05 season ended after only three appearances on the court. His leg injury that caused him to miss so much of his crucial season has completely healed and Sailes is now in the best shape he has ever been and is ready to rejoin the Hokies out on the court. An extremely versatile addition, Sailes rarely makes mistakes and knows how to work any situation on the court to the advantage of his teammates.
The Hokies boast two senior players this season, Allen Calloway and Shawn Harris. Unfortunately Calloway is limited this season due to illness, but Harris is ready to pick up the slack. Named team captain, Harris is one of the best guards in the ACC, displaying exceptional leadership skills and the ability to fill any number of roles Virginia Tech may need this season.
Sophomore Robert Krabbendam should be seeing an increase in playing time this season as the seven-foot starter is tipping the scales at 240 lbs. proving himself to be indispensable last season, Krabbendam will be a constant member of the frontcourt for the Hokies this season.
Virginia Tech fans are hungry to see more of the greatness they were exposed to last season and they’re snapping up tickets as fast as they can. Don’t wait around till they’re all gone. Get your Hokies tickets today.
