Team Information
The Cavaliers finished last season with a push toward constant improvement in the 2005-06 season and Coach Dave Leitao refuses to disappoint. Nine lettermen from last year’s team are returning, and the Cavaliers are counting heavily on their solid set of returning players to carry them through the 2005-06 season. Virginia Cavalier basketball tickets are already selling in anticipation of this year’s performance.
Their returning guards are starters as T.J. Bannister, J.R. Reynolds and Sean Singletary back up the Cavaliers with experience and consistency on and off the court. Singletary was an All-ACC Freshman Team selection last season after he earned the ACC Rookie of the Week award five times. He averaged 10.5 points, 3.9 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 29.9 minutes played per game. He was also the only University of Virginia player to start every single game of the 2004-05 season. He leads the team in assists and steals and ranked first among the entire ACC freshman in both categories.
Alongside him is Reynolds, who has started 45 of the 58 games he has played for the Cavaliers in the last two seasons. He averaged 10.7 points and 2.5 rebounds per game last season, coring in double figures 16 times, shooting 82.1 percent. Bannister also played in all 60 of Virginia’s games the last two seasons and started 21 of them. Averaging 4.3 points and 3.7 assists, he looks to improve his record even more this year. Each of these three returning starters provided game-winning strategies and played for the Cavaliers last season.
Senior Bill Campbell gives his team the depth they need as a guard, joined by sophomore Adrian Joseph on the perimeter. Joseph played in 23 games for Virginia last season and started 6. He was named the ACC Rookie of the Week after scoring a team high of 19 points against Wake Forest in his first collegiate start in the 2004-05 season. The front court for the Cavaliers is young and will be leaning heavily on the support of their seasoned players, determined to bring game-winning action to the floor this 2005-06 season.
The Cavaliers are working their way through a challenging ACC schedule and a non-conference schedule that includes the daunting task of beating some of their fiercest rivals on the court. Their impressive record to date indicates that Leitao knows how to get his team into postseason play. He focuses on the individuals and is fiercely dedicated to building his team around the strongest players, focusing on the mentoring of the newly-starting freshmen.
Sadly Virginia fans will say goodbye to University Hall as the Cavaliers will be playing their last season this year under that beloved roof. Beginning in the 2006-07 season, Virginia will play in the new John Paul Jones Arena. Still, the focus for fans is to make this last season at University Hall a winning one as they rush to get Virginia Cavaliers basketball tickets.
