Every fan of Villanova college basketball cringes at the memory of last year’s NCAA Sweet 16, the unfortunate location of what is now known as “The Call”. The Call came in the last few seconds of the NCAA Sweet 16 in March as Villanova, losing by a mere three points, had the ball against rival school, North Carolina. Allan Ray decided to go for it, went up for what could have been a winning shot, and the whistle blew. What happened? A foul? A basket? A basket and a foul? No, unfortunately for the Wildcats, they wouldn’t be going home winners that year, the call against Allan Ray was traveling, which resulted in a turnover and Carolina’s win. People still constantly talk about “The Call”; its notoriety has propelled Villanova’s popularity to an extraordinary degree as fans still support their favorite college team by purchasing Wildcats college basketball tickets.
Coach Jay Wright has no intention of allowing another fatal turnover like last season’s to take away the honors his team of greats rightfully deserves. Villanova has brought back every single important athlete of last year’s team, including a potential all-conference forward in Curtis Sumpter, who missed the fateful game against Carolina due to a knee injury. Sumpter is leading an extremely talented senior-heavy class the season that is ready to end its career with constant victories. In addition to Sumpter, Randy Foye, Ray Fraser and Jason Fraser are hungry to avenge “The Call” and take back the court for the Wildcats. In addition to the seasoned Sumpter and Fraser, Will Sheridan, a junior and freshman player Dante Cunningham will be taking over the frontcourt for Villanova this 2005-06 season.
The talent of the Wildcats continues to shine out of the backcourt with Ray, Foye and Mike Nardi, in addition to Kyle Lowry, who earned Big East All Freshman honors last season. In the summer months Ray was invited to try out for the USA Under 21 World Championship team while teammate Foye went to the World University Games team trials. All of Villanova’s guards are amazingly versatile and virtually interchangeable, an asset Wright plans to take advantage of this season.
The Wildcats are undoubtedly talented and are capable of increasing their already superior level of play to an even higher level. Villanova’s run to the tournament last year was in no way a fluke or due to luck, the Wildcats went 11-5 in the Big East last year and even losing to North Carolina last year seemed to only elevate their heroic stance in the eyes of their fans. Living up to everyone’s expectations this season will be difficult, but Villanova is poised and ready to take over the court once again. Their loyal fans rush to fill the Wachovia Center to see the Wildcats play as college basketball ticket sales soar.
