Team Information
Vanderbilt University was founded all the way back in 1873 and has lived up to its reputable goals of excellence and strength. Nashville has always wildly supported Vanderbilt’s athletics and no team has benefited more from their support than the Commodore basketball team. Season by season, Commodore basketball tickets fly out of the box office as fans pack the Memorial Coliseum to see the best the SEC has to offer.
Commodore basketball history goes back farther than most, as they played host to one of the very first basketball games every played. In the fall of 1891, Dr. James Naismith decided to create an indoor sport to avoid nasty winter weather and was asked to instruct YMCA’s across the country as to how to play this newly-developed game. His solution was to invent the game of basketball and the game spread across the United States and soon became the number one winter sports for YMCA facilities across the country.
Vanderbilt’s interest in this new game became evident early on as the campus newspaper picked up the much-talked about topic and began printing article after article about this new craze, “basketball”. First hitting the courts in 1900, the Commodores have continued their rich tradition of the sport and the game grew in popularity over the years. Still, university officials were wary of this new game in the early years and warned student athletes to stay away from it. Of course no one listened and the tradition of excellent basketball grew into the fanatic enthusiasm that it is today at Vanderbilt.
But the road to greatness was by no means smooth. As other colleges across the nation began to recognize basketball as a legitimate sport; Vanderbilt struggled to find an appropriate home for their burgeoning team to play. The Old Gym was used as a court for practice but it was too small to accommodate the crowds of fans the Commodores had begun to attract. It took the university until 1952 to build a proper new facility to host their great team and they dedicated this wonder with a game against arch-rival Virginia.
Commodore basketball has lasted over 100 years and has seen 25 different head coaches throughout the seasons. Their overall record is a solid 1,319-956 and their tradition of excellence has attracted powerful coaches such as Eddie Fogler, Bob Polk, Kevin Stallings, C.M. Newton and Roy Skinner.
Legendary athletes Pinky Lipscomb, Clyde Lee, Jan van Breda Kolff, Billy Joe Adcock, Perry Wallace, Phil Cox, Joe Ford, Will Perdue, Dan Langi and Butch Feher have worn their black and gold Vanderbilt colors with pride over the years, forcing the nation to stand up and take notice of their remarkable talent.
