Team Information

The University of Connecticut Huskies men’s basketball tickets are a fan’s pass to the premier sporting experience in the state. Coached by Jim Calhoun, a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, the UConn Huskies are once again an NCAA favorite and a force to be reckoned with. Whether it’s a Huskies ticket to the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, part of the 28 million dollar UConn Sports Center Complex, or at the Huskies home away from home, the Hartford Civic Center, Connecticut’s best sports team is a thrill to watch.

In the twenty years since Calhoun has been at Connecticut, the Huskies have won 15 Big East titles, two NCAA national championships, and a Nation Invitation Tournament championship. In the last sixteen years, UConn has been to the NCAA tournament 13 times. Having never lost a first round game in that span, they have been to the Sweet Sixteen ten times, the Elite Eight six times, and the Final Four twice on their way to their two NCAA titles. That resulted in a 33-10 record in the NCAA tournament, complementing a 12-4 record in the NIT. In the thirty six years prior to Calhoun’s arrival in 1986, the Huskies made six NIT appearances and 13 NCAA appearances, reaching the Sweet Sixteen twice and the Elite Eight once, with no trips to the Final Four much less any championships.

Last year the Huskies won 23 games and again returned to the NCAA tournament. They also won 13 conference games winning them the Big East regular season championship. Last year they were a young and talented team, and were led by sophomores Charlie Villanueva and Josh Boone. Villanueva was awarded second team All-Big East after finishing with 13.6 points per game, and 8.3 rebounds per game. After declaring for the draft he was picked in the first round by the Toronto Raptors with the seventh pick overall. Boone came into his own averaging 12.4 points per game and with 8.4 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game, became the Big East defensive player of the year. Freshman Rudy Gay shared the Big East rookie of the year with Georgetown’s Jeff Green, after averaging 11.8 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per game. Sophomore Marcus Williams whose 9.6 points per game along with a league leading 7.8 assists per game earned him the Big East most improved player award. Rounding out the starting line-up were juniors Rashad Anderson and Denham Brown. Anderson averaged 11.9 points per game but missed time due to injury as Brown stepped up with 10.4 points per game.

Heading into this season, fans holding Husky tickets will be in for a ride as the team has lost only one starter after Villanueva’s departure in the draft. Not only will the rest of the starters be returning, but Seniors Hilton Armstrong and Ed Nelson are expected to contribute along with a talented group of new freshman. Now with a Naismith Hall of Fame trophy on his resume, Calhoun looks to continue having the type of success that earned him the honor. The UConn Huskies have high expectations and are the team to beat in the Big East.
