Team Information
The Texas Tech Red Raiders potential can be summed up in two words, Bobby Knight. The famous coach, who some would refer to as infamous, has redefined what Texas Tech basketball means. Some fans are picking up Red Raider tickets and heading to the United Spirit Arena just to see what Knight will do next, but whatever it is, it will probably involve winning.
Of course Texas Tech basketball did not begin with Bob Knight. It began in 1925 and in 81 seasons of basketball they have an all-time record of 1179-886. Texas Tech has been to the NCAA tournament 13 times and the National Invitation Tournament 5 times. But since Coach Knight’s arrival the Red Raiders have been redefined. Gone are the days of ups and downs as since his arrival, the Red Raiders have won at least 22 games in each of their seasons. Coach Knight brings a tradition of winning as he is moving up the list of all-time wins with 832. After successful careers in West Point and Indiana, Knight has brought that winning attitude to Texas Tech. In his six years at West Point, Knight’s teams won at least 20 games twice, setting a school record 22 wins. He brought Army to the NIT four times, finishing third once and fourth twice. It was however at Indiana where Knight became the coaching legend that he is, making 24 NCAA appearances, and excelling in post season play. In 1975 and 1976, Coach Knight led his team to consecutive undefeated seasons, and won the Big 10 Championships several times. Under Knight’s direction, the Hoosiers won the NIT in 1979, and nearly captured in again in 1985. All in all, Knights record at Indiana stood at an impressive 662-239.
Since heading to Texas Tech, Knight has kept up his winning tradition. In his first season, Knight took his Red Raiders from the bottom of the Big 12 to a tie for third best in the conference with 23 wins. That season Texas Tech went to the NCAA tournament for the eleventh time in school history. They have since returned twice. Knight almost earned another NIT championship in 2003 as the Red Raiders fell just shy of a championship. In 2004, Texas Tech won an NCAA tournament game for the first time since 1976. Last year they it even further and made it to the Sweet Sixteen.
With the talented junior Jay Jackson, Knight plans to make another run at the post season this year. Jackson is on a pace to break Andre Emmett’s school scoring record. Jackson will be returning along with starters Darryl Dora and Martin Zeno. Zeno, only a sophomore, has already shown sign of being a natural leader. This will come in handy as it will be a young team, with seven freshmen coming in and hoping to contribute.
However things break down, Coach Bob Knight will surely be in control. Fans catching a game with Red Raiders tickets will be in for a show, the Bobby Knight show. It’s a good thing for Texas Tech that means more wins.
