Team Information
The Texas A&M Aggies are looking to continue their turnaround, building on the progress they made after a particularly disappointing campaign in 2003-2004. Under the leadership of head coach Billy Gillispie, Texas A&M men’s basketball is doing just that and Aggies ticket holders can expect to see an invigorated team playing in the Reed Arena this year. With two of their three key players returning this year, the Aggies have a good shot at continuing there recent success. There goal is to once again return to the post season.
The Aggies have some experience in the post season. Making it to the NCAA tournament in 1951, 1964, 1969, 1975, 1980, and 1987, they have had made the Sweet Sixteen twice, first in 1969 and again in 1980. They have been in the National Invitation Tournament in 1979, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1994, and most recently 2005, getting as far as the third round in 1982 and 2005.
Things had not been going well in the Texas A&M men’s basketball program, that is until Billy Gillispie. Orchestrating a dramatic turnaround at Texas-El Paso two years earlier, Texas A&M hired Gillispie in 2004 hoping he could make lightning strike twice. Have not had a winning season in eleven years, Gillispie appeared to be the man for the job, and that he was. After going just 7-21 the year before, Gillispie’s Aggies exploded onto the scene starting off the season 11-0. Having been picked to finish last in the Big 12, the Aggies wound up 21-10, completing one of the biggest improvements in the country, a feat Gillispie has now performed two years running. With a conference record of 8-8 Gillispie earned coach of the year honors in the Big 12 and his team was rewarded with a trip to the post season for the first time in eleven years. Gillispie however was not done there. It had been twenty three years since the Aggies had won a post season game, and last year the Aggies won not one, but two.
Led by Antoine Wright, the Aggies were a formidable opponent last year as Wright made all-Big 12. It was not a one man show however as Wright was backed up by freshman Joseph Jones and sophomore Acie Law, both of whom earned honorable mention for all-Big 12. The Aggies 21 wins were most in school history as was the 8 conference wins. Jones posted seven double doubles last year, the most by a freshman in the Big 12, and is expected to be a top rebounder. Law established himself as a starter averaging 12 points per game and came in third in the Big 12 with 4.9 assists.
While Wright left the team in the NBA draft, being taken by the NJ Nets in the first round, Jones will only be a sophomore and Law a junior. They will be joined by Edie Smith, a senior transfer and junior transfer Antanas Kavaliauskas. Aggies tickets will be in demand once again as Gillispie continues to improve this team.
