Team Information
The Bulls have constantly overcome seasons of injury, illness and disciplinary snafus and emerged as solid contenders in the Big East. Last season was an unexpected display of talent as South Florida shocked Charlotte in their last regular season game of the year. They continued to wow fans and the press alike when they went up against Cincinnati in the Conference USA Tournament in the quarterfinals. The Bulls, who hadn’t defeated against a top 25 team since 1992, suddenly found themselves ahead of two of the top teams in the nation in less than a week. Eager to live up to their new reputation as winners, South Florida is impressing fans with this year’s lineup. Fans are catching the excitement of the 2005-06 season by hurrying to purchase their Bulls basketball tickets at the Sun Dome.
Head coach Robert McCullum continues to be staunchly committed to South Florida’s potential, especially now that the Bulls can take advantage of the Northeast’s fantastic recruiting resources. South Florida’s offense will be headed up by junior athlete Melvin Buckley, a recent transfer from Purdue. Buckley is the best on the perimeter and still operates at a potential star level in transition positions. He has the ability to score as well as finish and continuously impressed the collegiate basketball world with his career-high 20 points against LSU in the 2003 NCAA tournament. Another new player, junior college transfer student Melvyn Richardson will be adding much-needed strength and speed to the Bull’s interior game. Senior center Solomon Jones continues to mature into one of C-USA’s top shot blockers and will continue to assert himself more often this season.
The Bulls’ backcourt boasts David Sills, a New York legend who attended four different high school and three junior colleges. With South Florida now a key contender in the Big East Sills has the possibility of making immediate contributions at the point guard position. Highly energetic and charismatic, Sills’ attitude is an integral part to South Florida’s performance on the court this season. Sophomore player Collin Dennis’ twenty five point showing against UAB last season puts him solidly into the starting lineup for the Bulls this year. As he continues to improve, Dennis should find himself to be one of South Florida’s top scorers. James Holmes is a returning senior making 16 out of 20 field goal attempts last season will add more depth to the backcourt this 2005-06 season, backing up Marius Prekevicius, the Bulls’ best three point shooter.
South Florida raised eyebrows across the United States last season by their solid finish in conference games. This year Bulls fans expect no less from this conference favorite as they hurry to sell out arenas throughout the nation as they send ticket sales to see the South Florida Bulls skyrocketing to an all time high.
