Flashy floor work and elite players are constants as the Panthers constantly impress fans across the nation as one of the biggest names in the Big East. Fighting for an NCAA tournament appearance has become run of the mill for University of Pittsburg, a team no longer stranger to being winners. Fans far and wide rush to pack arenas to see their favorite Big East teams, no matter what they have to do to buy Panther college basketball tickets. Senior point guard Carl Krauser played a big part in last season’s success, contemplating an early trip out to the NBA, yet still couldn’t make the break from his beloved Panthers. He returned for his final year of eligibility in college basketball and his coach, Jamie Dixon couldn’t be more pleased to have his star with him for one more year. Krauser makes himself invaluable by helping usher in a new batch of stars for Dixon, lending the Panthers the maturity that just might take them all the way this season.
Freshmen additions Tyrell Biggs and Sam Young are making an immediate impact on Pittsburg’s frontcourt. Biggs is huge, as promised, weighing in at an impressive 6’8” and 260 pounds of muscle. He was sought after by Maryland, Syracuse and Connecticut, known throughout this conference as being a fierce ball handler. Biggs has even gone so far as to be compared to Craig Smith, a Boston College power forward who has been a first-team All Big East pick for the last two seasons. Young is no slouch on the court either and is a well-known leaper who led Hargrave Military Academy to a No. 2 ranked spot in the nation in the 2004-05 season. He and Biggs will prove to be formidable opponents in the frontcourt this year joined by junior center, Aaron Gray who averaged 4.3 points and 2.8 rebounds for every 11.6 minutes of play he received last season.
Krauser’s return to the backcourt is the headlining news surrounding the Panthers this season; his expertise should give Pittsburg one of the best backcourts in the entire Big East, no matter the age of his teammates. Much like Krauser, freshman Levance Fields is a product of New York City with a thirst for monumental plays. The shining moment of his high school career was when he scored 20 points in the final six minutes of a game. Adding even more strength and speed to the backcourt this season is sophomore 3-point specialist Ronald Ramon who will be used as a combo guard, anticipating this season to be his breakout year. Antonio Graves is solid at shooting guard, but Keith Benjamin is eager to push for Graves’ spot in the action.
The Panthers proved last season that they have what it takes to be winners, and with Krauser returning, it can only help strengthen this young team. Pittsburg landed two of the top athletes in the New York and New Jersey area when they added Biggs and Fields to the team and they plan on going all the way this year. Fans believe in their favorite college basketball team and are rushing to buy tickets to see the Panthers play at the Peterson Events Center.
