One of the most successful men’s basketball teams in the Big 12 conference, the Oklahoma University Sooners are once again primed and ready to win. Coming off a regular season conference title last season, head coach Kelvin Sampson is expected more of the same. Sooners tickets will be a hot commodity as OU is reloaded and ready to win.
The Sooners are one of the most successful teams in the Big 12, having not missed post season play in twenty four years. They have been in the National Invitation Tournament seven times, making it to the semi-finals in 1982 and the finals in 1991. They were in the NCAA playoffs in 1939, 1943, and 1947, and appeared in the modern day NCAA tournament 20 times, 5 times as the number one seed. One of their most famous alumni, Wayman Tinsdale, led the team in several categories during his time on the team, leading them to their first number one seed in the NCAA tournament. Since 1995, they have been coached by Kelvin Sampson who was built up quite a resume of his own. Having come from Washington State University, in his 23rd year overall as a head coach, Sampson has 435-248 record, led his team to 11 NCAA tournaments, 3 Sweet Sixteen appearances, making the Elite Eight twice, and the Final Four once. In his eleven seasons at Oklahoma University, Sampson has brought the Sooners to one NIT and 10 NCAA tournaments, not missing the post season since his arrival at OU.
Even though the Sooners had won the Big 12 tournament in 2001, 2002, and 2003, until last year they had not won a regular season championship since 1989 when they were still in the Big Eight. With a 25-8 record last year they had not only accomplished that goal, but also finished with twenty or more wins for the eighth consecutive season. A major part of the team’s success last year was junior Taj Grey. After ranking thirteenth in league in scoring with 14.6 points per game, fourth in rebounding with 8.2 per game, and second in blocked shots with 1.8, Grey was named first-team All-Big 12. Gray was helped by Kevin Bookout who made third team All-Big 12.
Together they finished first and second in the Big 12 for field goal percentage. Also Valuble to the team was Junior transfer student Terrell Everett. Everett was a top performer with 166 assists in 33 games, good for a 5.0 assist average.
The Sooners are ready to compete once again as Taj Grey, Kevin Bookout, and Terrell Everett all return as seniors. They will be joined by Sophomores David Godbold who posted 7.4 points and 3.2 rebounds while averaging just over 25 minutes of playing time per game last year, and Longa Longar, who missed only seven field goals last year. The talent and experience on this team makes them favorites again this year as Sooners ticket holders will be heading to Lloyd Noble Center with high hopes.
With the team Coach Sampson has assembled, they have a great shot at meeting those expectations.
