Team Information
Torin Francis’ decision to bypass the NBA draft this year was the best news the Fighting Irish have had all reason. Francis returns to add some much-needed stability to Notre Dame’s college basketball program and is one of the many reasons fans are flocking to buy tickets to see Notre Dame Fighting Irish basketball at the Joyce Center. His return also restores solid leadership in the frontcourt to a team who hopes to be contending for the NCAA tournament again this season. Francis is an integral part of the team and plans to lead his team onto victory this 2005-06 season.
Joining Francis on the front lines is a mix of successful athetes from the past with a group of young Fighting Irish players hoping to meet an immediate impact on the scoreboards. Senior Rick Cornett also joins the frontcourt as an impressive offensive presence, possessing some of the best offensive moves the Fighting Irish have, becoming a perfect foil for Francis’ consistency and stamina. Rob Kurtz returns as a sophomore with an uncanny instinct for the game and a willingness to play wherever and whenever needed. Omar Isreal adds his own natural athletic ability and prowess, helping to bulk up Notre Dame’s offensive game even more this year. Rookies Luke Zeller and Zach Hillesland could also see some playing time in the frontcourt this season, eager to prove themselves at the collegiate level. Zeller was named Indiana’s Mr. Basketball last year and is giving the Fighting Irish a much needed offensive power-packed punch.
Senior player Chris Quinn and freshman Kyle McAlarney are competing for the leading role in the backcourt. McAlarney has the skill and ability to keep Quinn at the two-guard spot and solidly backing up Notre Dame with his floor game. Junior athlete, Colin Falls who scored 93 three pointers last year, stands to come up big in the most crucial games in the Big East. He averaged 15.2 points in 16 regular season Big East Conference games and 9.3 points in the Irish’s 13 other games. Junior teammate Russell Carter also adds power to the backcourt along with Ryan Ayers who will be seeing time at small forward and shooting guard.
Notre Dame desperately tried to live up to their potential last season, making it to the first round of the Big East Tournament facing rival team, Rutgers. The Fighting Irish also played in the opening round game of the NIT at home against Holy Cross. This is a team no stranger to victory. Now that basketball programs of equal prowess have entered the Big East (such as DePaul, Marquette, Louisville and Cincinnati), the Fighting Irish finally have competition worthy of their athletic ability.
Head coach Brey has reached a crossroads in Fighting Irish basketball and is ready to lead his team onto even greater victory this 2005-05 season. Fans hurry to support the Notre Dame Fighting Irish by buying up thousands of tickets to see the Fighting Irish play in the Big East.
