Team Information
North Carolina Tar Heels tickets got a huge boost when a gunslinging freshman came to town in the form of Tyler Hansbrough, who is on pace to lead Carolina in both points and rebounds this season. No freshman has ever led the Tar Heels in scoring and rebounding in the same season. Over 7 games, Hansbrough has hit 55 out of 65 free throw attempts, raising his percentage from 65.6 to 75.2. Of course such a performance from a freshman can not go unnoticed by the ACC, who named Hansbrough their Rookie of the Week four weeks in a row. He has six overall ACC Rookie-of-the-Week titles and ties the school record set by Sam Perkins in 1980-81, not to mention being tied for second in all of ACC history. His current field goal percentage of 61.0 is the highest ever to be reached by a Carolina freshman and leads all ACC players in the number of free throw attempts per game. He is also the media’s preseason choice for the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year Award, winning their favor by his constant excellent performance on the court. Throughout the past 15 games Hansbrough has led Carolina in a rush toward the ACC Championships as they follow this passionate freshman on his journey to greatness.
Of course Hansbrough isn’t alone in his excellence, being joined on the court by Wes Miller, who is playing the best basketball of his career in this season. Miller has never scored more than six points in a game for UNC, but has reached and surpassed that mark an overwhelming 10 times already and shows no sign of slowing down. Miller leads the Tar Heels with 30 three-pointers made so far this season and is second only to David Noel in three-point percentage. He is also among North Carolina’s best on-the-ball defenders, earning the title of defensive player of the game four times by his fellow teammates.
Overall the Tar Heels are holding their opponents to a 40.6 percent shooting from the floor this season, putting them at number four in the ACC, only allowing their opposing teams to score a maximum of 67.4 points per game. Returning senior David Noel has raised eyebrows as he’s been scoring in the double figures consistently. Noel holds the number three spot in scoring and second in rebounding, leading the team in three-point field goal percentage.
As Hansbrough lives up to the hype, his fellow freshmen aren’t going unnoticed. Joining him on the court in 2005-06 are fellow freshmen Bobby Frasor, Marcus Ginyard and Danny Green. Junior Reyshawn Terry is also putting up impressive numbers as he recently exceeded his career-high this past December. Still, Hansbrough, Fasor and Ginyard are who everyone is talking about when the Tar Heels make their way into conversation. Obviously they are living up to their reputations, making North Carolina one of the most-watched teams in the ACC. Fans are hurrying to make ticket sales deadlines as they can’t wait to see the Tar Heel freshmen light up the courts.
