Team Information
The University of Missouri men’s basketball team is looking for its ninth straight trip to post season play and Tigers tickets are in high demand. With a team whose strength will come from a returning core of young talent, Mizzou will look to continue its streak of success. Coach Quin Snyder will be looking to continue the momentum picked up at the end of last season when the team won six of its last eight games. Proving his reputation as a teacher of the game, Snyder took a group of young players and helped them mold into a team. Now that team looks to make its mark in the Big 12.
Missouri has a history of success, winning the Missouri Conference Championship in 1918, 1920, 1921, and 1922. They won the Big 6 in 1930, 1939, and 1940. That winning tradition continued in the Big 8 with regular season championships in 1976, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1987, 1990, and 1994, and Big 8 post season championships in 1978, 1982, 1987, 1989, 1991, and 1993. The Tigers are no strangers to the NCAA championships as they have been to the tournament 21 times. In the last eight years alone, they have been to the NCAA tournament five times, and the National Invitational Tournament three times.
Taking over for Norm Stewart who finished his 32 years in 1999 with a trip to the “Big Dance,” Snyder is no stranger to the NCAA tournament himself as he has made three trips to the Final Four as a player at Duke, and two more as an assistant coach. In his first season as head coach, the Tigers eighteenth wins marked the winningest season, besting the 1921 Tigers who went 17-1 en route to winning the Missouri Conference Championship. In 2002, Snyder came six points shy of returning to the Final Four as a head coach when Mizzou beat UCLA in the Sweet Sixteen, but fell to Oklahoma in the Elite Eight.
Last year’s team risked taking a step back on Snyder’s quest for improvement, and their streak of post season victories could’ve been in jeopardy. The Tigers however finished strong as they beat six NCAA tournament teams and led by NBA first round draft pick Linas Kleiza and senior Jason Conley, they beat three top twenty teams. With victories against Kansas, Oklahoma, and Gonzaga, the Tigers finished 14-5 in their first year at the new Mizzou Arena. Now having lost Kleiza to the draft and Conley to graduation, returning starters Jimmy McKinney, Jason Horton, and Kevin Young will look to pick up the slack. Horton led the team with 103 assists last year and Marshall Brown showed a knack for the three point shot. The team may be looking to Thomas Gardner to pick up the slack of the departed Kleiza as Gardner is to top returning scorer on the team.
Armed with youth and enthusiasm, the Missouri Tigers will be looking to help Coach Snyder return to the Final Four, making it to the post season in all of Snyder’s seasons as head coach in the process. Tigers tickets to the new Mizzou Arena will be at a premium, as Missouri will be a team to watch out for.
