Team Information
Marquette’s seventh-year head coach Tom Crean had an eventful off season as he was desperately trying to prepare for the Golden Eagles’ 2005-06 season. First, off-guard Dameon Mason ended his stay at Marquette by announcing his intentions to transfer to LSU. This could have been a serious blow to Marquette’s program, but Crean stayed optimistic as he knew he had the experience to make his team great again this season, even without Mason. This year he has two new faces next to him on the bench as his older assistants have been replaced and is eager to prove the Golden Eagles’ prowess despite personnel changes. Still, by far the biggest challenge of the season is integrating seven new scholarship players, most of who are slated to become starters, with the stable of returning talent. Crean is a master at blending his teams and fans eagerly race to the Bradley Center for their Golden Eagles basketball tickets so they can be part of the masterful reworking of Marquette’s program.
Fan and the press agree that Steve Novak is without competition as the best long-range shooter in college basketball. Last season he shot 46.1 percent from behind the arc, 90.5 percent from the free throw line and wreaked havoc on the Golden Eagles’ opposition at his position of power forward. This year, even more is expected of him and he is ready to live up to everyone’s expectations; plan on seeing an improvement in Novak’s rebounding and an extreme toughening up in his defensive game. Joining Novak in the frontcourt is returnee Ryan Amoroso, Marquette’s best offensive threat and junior center Mike Kinsella who has an amazingly soft shooting stroke. Ousmane Barrow has his legendary long reach to add to the mix and Chris Grimm is a solid defender.
The backcourt is where new talent for the Golden Eagles will really become apparent as Crean begins the process of switching over to a three-guard offense. Three freshmen, Dominic James, Jerel McNeal and Wes Matthews, all will be seeing extensive play on the court. Joining them will be seniors, Chapman and Fitzgerald to add experience and a bit more versatility. James is an impressive athlete who is expected to be controlling Marquette’s offensive game the second he steps out onto the court. He has an uncanny ability to break down any defense, get into the lane and serve it out to Novak, Fitzgerald and others on the perimeter.
Even with the addition of so many new players, Marquette is expected to have a solid presence this season in the Big East. They will be much deeper this year with the sophomores much more experienced than any other athletes their age in the league. Crean craves versatility in his players and this year he definitely has his wish granted. Fans crowd in to the Bradley Center to see the Golden Eagles once again take over the court in the Big East, Marquette University basketball tickets are going faster than ever before.
