The official name for University of Kentucky’s athletic teams is the Wildcats, and has been that way since 1909 due to the ferocity of the team’s performance. Now in its 28th season, the Rupp Arena is home to the Wildcats and recently underwent remodeling. In addition to replacing the lower arena’s seats, the student section has been moved closer to the floor in an effort to intimidate the Wildcats’ opponents as their fellow students back them in a standing-room only configuration. These improvements to the design of the arena follow changes that have taken place over the past three years, including four new video boards, a new playing floor and design, as well as concourse enhancements in an effort to increase the comfort level for fans and student athletes alike. The transformation of what is already considered to be the best arena in the history of college basketball, is all part of a $15 million planned upgrade in hopes of creating the finest facility in college basketball.
Since 1976 University of Kentucky has hosted three national championship teams while watching three others advance to the Final Four. Eight seasons have gone by as the Wildcats continued their tradition of remaining unbeaten on their home floor.
Despite the Kentuck Wildcats history of being one of the best teams in college basketball, Coach Tubby Smith is determined to push his players to be even better. He demands his athletes constantly raise their level of play to meet every single opponent on the court with an unstoppable force. Never getting too comfortable with a prospective win, Smith encourages all his players to stay mentally prepared every time they step on the court.
Rajon Rondo leads the Wildcats with 15.1 points, 8.2 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game and provides Kentucky with quality leadership on the court. It is a direct result of his powerful presence on the court that Kentucky has the heart and the determination to face any team they are thrown up against.
