Team Information

The Georgia Bulldogs are a team rich in tradition as well as talent on the basketball court. Many of their fans stem from long lines of Yale alumni and Georgia Bulldog basketball tickets sell out on a regular basis as fans flock to Stegeman Coliseum to watch the Bulldogs in action.

Legend has it that the name originated from Yale because the University of Georgia had very strong ties to the prestigious Ivy League school in its early years. The first president of University of Georgia, Abraham Baldwin, was a Yale alumnus and in 1920 the Bulldogs officially got the name to represent all their athletic teams. In the press the Bulldogs are touted as having a certain dignity as well as being ferocious, and the team strives yearly to live up to their admirable, decades-long reputation.

Their mascot, a bulldog of course, is one of the most well-known mascots in the entire country. The dog’s current line began with a solid white English Bulldog back in 1956, who was in the direct line of the bulldog who took Georgia to the Rose Bowl in 1943. The Bulldog’s mascot has even appeared in a film, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, as well as being featured on the cover of an issue of Sports Illustrated magazine. The list of accolades continues with the historical moment of being the first mascot invited to the Downtown Athletic Club, not to mention being escorted by its president while being photographed with Heismen Trophy winner Herschel Walker. And to top it all off, the Bulldog’s beloved mascot was the only mascot to make it to the Final Four basketball tournament.

Continuing on in their rich traditions, the oldest and most lasting tradition is Georgia’s fight song, “Glory, Glory”, sung to the tune of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”. It has been sung at games dating all the way back to the early 1890s. There have been countless “Bulldog” songs throughout the decades, yet the most enjoyed tune has forever been “Glory, Glory”.

But what keeps the crowds packing in stadiums across the country is the talent represented in Georgia’s team this season. Coach Dennis Felton is excited about the quality of his team in 2006 and is pushing the athletes to grow at every opportunity. His enthusiasm is largely due to the fact that this year, the Bulldogs have eleven scholarship players, including three who top the 6’8” mark. Experts predict that Coach Felton’s toughest decisions will be related to the amount of playing time to hand out in the backcourt, where Levi Stukes, Sundiata Gaines and Channing Toney will be forced to prove themselves against the three new talented freshmen.

No matter who Felton keeps on the court, the Bulldogs are demanding recognition this season. As the excitement on the court heats up, Georgia Bulldogs basketball tickets are going fast, so make sure to get your seasons worth!
