Team Information
In the first year in his father’s old school, head coach John Thompson III was thrown headfirst into an action-packed Hoyas’ basketball season. Forced to lean heavily on the freshman class, he couldn’t afford to slowly develop talent and easing them into the grandeur of The Big East Conference. No, he threw them right into the thick of it, and they proved that freshman could play just as well, if not better, than seasoned senior players. Georgetown made college basketball ticket sales skyrocket last season as this predominately freshman team made headline after headline with the press.
Last season Thompson pushed freshmen Jeff Green, Jonathon Wallace and Roy Hibbert and began to restore some serious respect to the Hoyas’ collegiate basketball program. All three freshman stars were thrust into the starting lineup for Georgetown and won 19 games, resulting in a .500 record in the Big East and almost earned the Hoyas their first NCAA bid since 2001. Of course throwing inexperienced ballplayers in as starters in the heavy-hitting Big East Conference wasn’t Thompson’s ideal scenario, but somehow he made it work so well the Hoyas shocked the nation with their record last season. Green was named to the Big East All-Rookie team after his average of 13.1 points per game while Wallace proved to be an exceptional outside shooting threat, putting up a standing percentage that ranked fifth in the league. Hibbert, the 7’2 center proved to be an invaluable force in the middle.
Still, Georgetown’s frontcourt gained an even bigger boost in June when Brandon Bowman decided to pull his name out of the NBA draft, a forward with an average of 15.1 points and 6.1 rebounds his junior season, Thompson knew Bowman would be an incredible asset to his team this year. Joining Green and Hibbert once again, Bowman is ready to take Georgetown even farther in his final season with the Hoyas.
The Hoyas will also rely heavily on their three-man rotation in the backcourt. Ashanti Cook has started every single game in the past two seasons and is solid in his outside shooting. Wallace was a surprise last year, starting every game his freshman year and proving to be a formidable threat from behind the 3-point arc. Darel Owens returns to Georgetown as a fifth year senior who can play the big guard spot as well as a small forward position and hit 38.7 percent of his 3-point attempts last season.
Last year was magic for the Hoyas as they nearly made their way into the NCAA tournament, marking a stunning success for Georgetown’s formerly lacking basketball program. The stage has been set for a breakout season for the Hoyas and they are eager to take advantage of their now-solid status on the court.
Last year’s freshmen combined with a few seasoned players promise to deliver a fantastic season this year and their loyal fans will never doubt them. Georgetown Hoyas basketball tickets are going fast, so make sure to go to the MCI Center to support your favorite Big East Conference contender!
