Team Information

As one of the most richly historical teams in college basketball, the Florida Gators command an awe-inspiring crowd of fans at every game. At home or on the road, their supportive fans are frantically scooping up Gators tickets to watch these athletes prove their excellence again and again.

The story of how the University of Florida’s athletic teams became known as the Gators dates back to the early 1900’s. The most accepted explanation is the one told by Austin Miller, whose father owned Miller’s, a Florida novelty store popular with students attending University of Florida in 1908. According to Miller, pennants proudly displaying the alligator in support of the University were first sold in the fall of 1908. Apparently it was a spur of the moment choice that was lucky enough to stick and carry on through decades of students, faculty, and athletes alike.

Still some die-hard fans don’t believe in Miller’s recounting of the tale and prefer to trace it back to the university’s first football captain and his rising legend of success. No matter how the image of the Gators was connected with who they are today, their fans are zealous and outrageously supportive. That especially rings true for the 2006 Florida Gators as the traditional conference rivalries have already begun to mount in intensity.

The Gator’s men's basketball squad won their first Southeastern Conference Tournament title in 2005, beating out the favored basketball superpower, the University of Kentucky Wildcats. Coached by Billy Donovan, who has been the top man for the Gators since 1996, Florida enjoys a tight rivalry with Kentucky in the highly competitive SEC. In a further show of impressive athleticism, 118 Gator athletes have represented 27 countries in ten Olympiads and have taken home 76 medals, including 39 gold medals over the span of the past forty years.

The overwhelming opinion expressed both by fans and the press is that the Gator’s basketball team has never been as exciting to watch as it is this season. Coach Donovan is determined to build a winning team, a feat he is obviously on track to accomplish with the addition of four-star shooting guard Doneal Mack who made his official statement to join the Gators in 2006. Mack, formerly of Statesville, North Carolina, played on the same basketball team as another future Florida basketball player, Jon Mitchell, also intent on joining the Gators this coming fall.

Still even without the added power of these soon-to-be Gators, this year’s team is putting up impressive numbers. Chris Richard has shown remarkable improvement in his blocking skills. Up front, Donovan insists that this year’s team is poised to deliver the best shot-blocking that the team has ever had. Joakim, Horford and Richard all have been displaying excellent timing and impressive instinct on the court.
