Team Information
Duke is widely recognized across the United States as college basketball’s most dominating program over the past decade and is proudly stepping up to defend its reputation this season. Head coach Mike Krzyzeski is continuing to lead the Blue Devils to greatness as he enters his 26th coaching season. Coach Kryzeski is joined by his two returning All-American players J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams. Redick and Williams, the current National Player of the Year and National Defensive Player of the Year are adding their combined leadership to what is considered the best freshman recruiting team in the nation. Duke is moving their pieces in to play for yet another serious shot at their fourth national championship and fans are swiping up the Blue Devils basketball tickets.
Joining solid team captains Williams and Redick, are seniors Sean Dockery, Patrick Johnson, Lee Melchionni and Ross Perkins. Dockery is known as one of the quickest guards in the entire ACC and has played in 97 career games. He is charging into his senior season with a solid junior year behind him, touting an average of 6.2 points and a jump to a .477 shooting average. Melchionni made himself indispensable to the Blue Devils during last year’s ACC championship games by constantly nailing clutch shots and averaged 7.7 points. Johnson stands out as a returning fifth year senior and a solid post player. Perkins is recognized the most for his teamwork and positive attitude and is a constant encouragement to his fellow teammates.
Overall, ten letter-winning players are returning to Duke for the 2005-06 season. In addition to their impressive core of six senior players, sophomores DeMarcus Nelson, David McClure, Patrick Davidson and Joe Pagliuca return to the court. The best freshman recruiting class in the ACC is ready to begin their careers with the Blue Devils in Martynas Pociu, Josh McRoberts, Jamal Boykin, Gerg Paulus and Eric Boateng.
Duke has dominated the ACC season like no other team, winning 119 league games and six regular season ACC championships. The Blue Devils became the first team in the history of the ACC to win a fifth consecutive tournament championship in 2003. Duke also earned a No. 1 seed placement this 2005 season, marking their seventh time to rank at the top of the ACC in the past eight years.
Many fans credit the team’s overall success to Coach Mike Krzyzewski who has 66 NCAA Tournament victories to boast of, the highest total in all of college basketball history. Others credit Duke’s constant success to their home arena, Cameron Indoor Stadium which is considered to be the world’s fourth-best sports venue of the 20th Century.
No matter the reason for the Blue Devils’ success, their fans flock to see the Duke team play and Blue Devils tickets are constantly in demand no matter their record or starting lineup over the years.
