Team Information
The DePaul University men’s basketball team will be looking to make a splash this year as fans with Blue Demons tickets will be watching their team compete in the Big East conference for the first time. Formally in the Conference USA, DePaul has a new coach, new players, and is in a new conference, but plans on keeping their winning attitude. Coach Jerry Wainwright looks to take advantage of this opportunity and write a new chapter in Blue Demon history.
DePaul will be coming into the Big East conference with a proud past, dating back to 1923. In 1942 coach Ray Meyer took over the team and so began one of the longest and most successful relationships in college basketball. Meyer found success at DePaul early as the team reached the NCAA tournaments for the first time in school history and continued all the way to the Final Four. This however was just the beginning as Meyer stayed at DePaul for a total of forty two years, bringing the team to the NCAA tournament thirteen times and the National Invitation Tournament seven times. In addition to the 1943 playoffs, the team made it back to the final four in 1979. In 1945, DePaul won the NIT when its winners were still considered the national champions. On that 1945 championship team was NBA legend George Mikan, who is considered one of the best players in the NBA’s early years and is in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. All in all, Meyer led his team to 37 winning seasons, 12 of them reaching at least 20 victories. Ray Meyer’s son Joey Meyer, who was successful a player on the team in the 1970s, assumed control of the team in 1984. Joe Meyer was head coach from 1984 to 1997 and led the team to three NIT appearances, seven NCAA tournament appearances and the Sweet Sixteen twice. Pat Kennedy took the Blue Demons to the NIT in 1999 and the NCAA in 2000.
In his three years with the Blue Demons their last head coach Dave Leitao brought the team to the NIT twice and in 2004 helped DePaul get its first NCAA tournament victory since 1989. With a veteran team last year the Blue Demons won 20 games, with 10 conference wins in their last season in the Conference USA. They reached the National Invitation Tournament and made it to the second round. Seniors Drake Diener, Quemont Greer, and Le Var Seals led the team with Greer making first team Conference USA and Diener making third team conference USA.
With Jerry Wainwright as the Blue Demons new head coach, DePaul ticket holders will be looking for the same winning tradition, regardless of the new faces and new conference. Junior Sammy Mejia is the teams leading scorer averaging 11.8 points per game last year, having already totaled 239 assists in his two years on the team. Senior Marlon Brumfield has established himself under the boards averaging 6.4 rebounds per game and making his presence known defensively. Juniors Lorenzo Thompson, Marcus Heard, and sophomore Cliff Clinkscales are also expected to contribute. New to the Blue Demons are freshman Rashad Woods and junior transfer from Miami Karron Clarke. Fans with Blues Demons tickets heading to the Allstate Arena will see a new team looking to establish themselves in the Big East.
