Team Information

The University of Colorado Buffaloes men’s basketball team is ready to build on a strong showing at the end of last season after a disappointing year. This is good news for fans buying Buffaloes tickets to the Colorado Events Center, as Ricardo Patton in his tenth season as head coach of the “Black and Gold” looks to use the momentum picked up in the conference tournament last year to rejuvenate a team full of potential. With a roster full of returning players, the Buffaloes look to return to their winning ways and use their combination of veteran leadership and young talent to make their mark in the Big 12 conference and in the long history of Colorado’s basketball program.

Around for just over a hundred years the Buffs, originally known only as the Black and Gold, have had success stories past and present, as they have made it to the NCAA tournament a total of ten times and the NIT tournament 7 times. 1940 was a year that stood out as they won their first NIT championship and entered the NCAA tournament for the first time. Just two years later they made it to the Final Four, finishing third in the NCAA playoffs. This was the first time they placed third in the NCAA, doing again in 1955. Colorado has won 8 conference titles in their history, one when they were in the Big 7 and three in the Big 8. They have yet to win the Big 12, but have experienced great success since Ricardo Patton was named interim head coach in 1996. Patton’s leadership had an immediate impact as Chauncey Billups, Colorado basketball’s most famous alumni, took the Buffaloes to their first NCAA tournament in 28 years in 1997. The team finished second in the conference that year. Over the next seven years Patton’s Buffaloes had a winning record five times, earned a birth to the NIT tournament three times, and made it back to the NCAA tournament in 2003.

Colorado experienced an unexpected slide last year finishing 14-16, winning only four games in the conference compared to ten the year before. Though the overall season was a disappointment, the Bufs showed some signs of life in the conference tournament, going in as the 11th seed and beating the sixth seeded Texas Longhorns in the first round. They showed a valiant effort coming within two points in a close game with Oklahoma State, the third seated team who eventually won the Big 12. The standout player was Richard Roby who in his freshman year finished with a 16 point per game average and 4.8 rebounds per game. Julius Ashby made his presence known in the paint with 6 rebounds a game and Chris Copeland established himself as a starter averaging 11.7 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game.

Patton and the Buffaloes are looking to re-establish themselves in the Big 12 this year. In their advantage, the Buffaloes have all five starters returning, including Roby, Copeland, Marcus Hall, and Jayson Obazuaye. Although the team has lost no starters this year, Julius Ashby is ineligible to play for the early part of the season due to academic probation, but is scheduled to rejoin the team.

With all the starters returning and Patton’s reputation for winning, Buffalo tickets will be in demand this year as the Black and Gold make a run for their next tournament bid.
