The University of Cincinnati Bearcats men’s basketball tickets will be a hot commodity this year as they make the move to the highly competitive Big East Conference. Fans will be heading to the Fifth Third Arena as a new era begins at UC. With plenty of returning seniors and a new head coach, the Bearcats look to make a splash in what is arguably the best conference in college basketball.
Formally in the Conference USA, the University of Cincinnati has a long and storied history under former head coach Bob Huggins, who left with a 399-128 record in 16 seasons and led the Bearcats to a conference season or tournament title in twelve of the last fourteen seasons. With six Final Four appearances, and back to back national championships in 1961 and 1962, the Bearcats are established in NCAA Tournament history with a 40-23 record in NCAA play. With a fifth strait trip to the Final Four in 1963, they just missed out on a third straight title. Even some of their losses have been memorable as they fell five times in the NCAA playoffs to the eventual tournament winner. More recently, during the Huggins era, Cincinnati reached the Final Four in 1992, made it to the Elite Eight three times, and saw the Sweet Sixteen four times. Recent alumni from those Huggins teams have gained success in the NBA like Nick Van Exel, DerMarr Johnson, and Kenyon Martin who was the number one pick overall, taken by the New Jersey Nets in the 2000 draft.
The Bearcats closed out their time in the Conference USA with a season filled with success and failure. Cincinnati finished with a 15-2 record at home in the Fifth Third Street Arena at Shoemaker Center, bringing their total home record to 230-29 in the 16 years they’ve been there. Jason Maxiell finished the year with a career total of 1,566 points ranking 11th in the team’s history, and with 252 blocks, second only to Kenyon Martin. Eric Hicks established his defensive prowess when his 72 blocks helped the team reach a total of 226, which topped the previous high of 223 set by the 1999-2000 team featuring Kenyon Martin. Hicks also exploded offensively when his scoring average reached 13.7 and his rebound average hit 9.0, up from 4.9 and 4.8. Jihad Muhammed also garnered attention as a Junior College transfer averaging 10.4 points per game and showing a flare for the three point shot. James White seemed to be caught in between positions playing a point forward, which may have accounted for a drop in his points per game, but he still led the team in assists and established himself as an offensive threat.
This year with former assistant coach Andy Kennedy having taken over for Huggins as head coach, the Bearcats look to start a successful campaign in the Big East. While Maxiell is no longer on the team, Hicks, Muhammed, and White, return as seniors and along with senior Armein Kirkland and junior Cedric McGowan they look to make UC Bearcats tickets a hot item this season.
