Team Information
Jason Kidd, a perennial NBA All-Star and surefire Hall of Famer, put California on the map back in the mid-90s. Now, the Golden Bears are trying to re-energize Haas Pavilion. But the road through the Pac 10 is brutal. Arizona, UCLA and Stanford have established themselves as not only conference powers, but also national title contenders on a yearly basis. That leaves Cal in a group of middle-of-the-roaders like Arizona State and Oregon. That’s about to change.
California Golden Bears basketball tickets are going fast as this young, exciting team rocks Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif. Dynamic sophomore Leon Powe, a 6-8, 240-pound offensive machine, will be scorching Pac-10 opponents, including UCLA and hated Stanford, all season. The 2004 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year is now aiming for conference Player of the Year honors.
Now in his 10th season at the helm, Head Coach Ben Braun has turned Golden Bears basketball into a must-see event. Already he has guided the team to more postseason appearances and postseason wins than any coach in Cal history, including four NCAA tournaments berths and the 1999 NIT championship. Two of Braun's players have won Pac-10 Player of the Year honors: Ed Gray in 1997 and Sean Lampley in 2001. Braun was the conference Coach of the Year in 1997 and a finalist for the 2003 Naismith National Coach of the Year. Braun's winning percentage is the best at Cal since Hall of Famer Pete Newell led the Bears to a 119-44 mark from 1955-60, including the 1959 national championship win over Louisville. Braun exudes youthful energy, and so do his teams. In his first season, 1996-97, he took over a squad expected to finish in the conference's bottom half and molded it into a second-place team that reached the NCAA regional semifinals. Cal knocked off both Princeton and Villanova during that tourney run.
In 1998-99, Braun's club became the first Cal team to beat three Top 10 schools, defeating North Carolina, UCLA and Arizona. That team capped its season with an NIT title.
Cal went on to reach the second round of the NCAA tournament in both 2001-02 and 2002-03. The latter team featured All-Pac-10 forwards Joe Shipp and Amit
Tamir.Powe is clearly the primetime attraction for the 2005-06 Bears, but he's far from Braun's only weapon. Guard Ayinde Ubaka, a 6-3 junior who like Poe hails nearby Oakland, joins with senior guard Richard Midgley and sophomore guard Omar Wilkes to give Cal one of the most talented backcourts in the country. Cal, which gave the NBA Jason Kidd, is no upstart, no one-year wonder. The Bears have firmly established themselves as a conference power, and the Leon Powe show should not be missed.
