Team Information
The Baylor University Bears men’s basketball program is once again in for an uphill battle, but fans can expect Bears tickets to be a worthwhile investment as the team continues to rebuild under Coach Scott Drew. Limited by NCAA restrictions for the third year, Drew continues to fight the odds and looks for success with another surprise season following better than expected results in his first two seasons with limited resources. Baylor has put together what should be the most talented team to call the Ferrell Center home during Scott Drew’s tenure, as it reloads with what has been described as the sixteenth best recruiting class of the year.
Baylor is Texas’ oldest university in continuous operation. The basketball program has seen many ups and downs in its near one hundred year history, including two trips to the NCAA Final Four, one in 1948 and the other in 1950. In more recent history, Baylor was involved in one of the top moments in Big 12 history when then Bears upset the number seven ranked Iowa State team in the 2001 conference tournament. They lost to Texas in the semi-finals, but the victory against Iowa State was the biggest upset the conference had ever seen.
Baylor began rebuilding the men’s basketball team after former coach Dave Bliss was accused of violating NCAA rules. This followed the shocking news involving the shooting of former player Patrick Dennehy. The following year Drew was hired as head coach and was charged with the daunting task of leading a team with a reduced number of scholarship players, after losing most of the team’s players in the wake of what happened under the previous staff. The Bears responded with 8 victories, three of them conference games, after critics thought they would not win a single game all season. The next year, the Bears faced more challenges losing all but one scholarship player and two walk-ons. Drew responded with a stellar recruiting class, bringing in freshman Mamadou Diene and Aaron Bruce who in his freshman year garnered attention as an All-America and Big 12 player of the year candidate. Despite the inexperience from being the youngest team in the conference, Baylor increased their win total to 9.
Now with four starting players returning and another highly touted draft class, the Baylor University Bears look to improve once again. In addition to Bruce, who is now a sophomore, Tim Bush, Richard Hurd, and Tommy Swanson will be back. Though their season will be shortened by further problems with the NCAA, they retain a positive outlook and remain geared up for the future. Criticized in the past for their lack of height, there are now five players on the team 6’8” or taller joining the only senior, Tommy Swanson who is 6’10,” including freshmen Jari Vanttaja and Mohamed Kone. While an obstacle in the past, youth is now on their side, as Baylor makes a run at building a backbone for a successful future in the Ferrell Center.
Bears tickets will provide an exciting experience in the years to come, as this is a team offering a huge potential for the future.
