Arizona State Sun Devils basketball tickets are going fast thanks to the dangerous inside-outside combination of freshman Jeff Pendergraph and junior Kevin Kruger. Fans are flocking to Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe to catch this rising duo, which aims to lead the Sun Devils to their fourth postseason appearance in the past five years.
Head Coach Rob Evans loves what he sees out of Pendergraph, a 6-10, 210-pounder out of Etiwanda, Calif. The precocious freshman is thriving despite missing all of fall conditioning and most of November practices due to surgery to remove a benign tumor in his left leg. He is cleaning the glass and shooting for a high percentage. Pendergraph is just the fourth ASU freshman in the last nine years to notch 20 points in a game.
Kruger, a 6-2 junior guard out of Marietta, Ga., has put himself among the PAC-10 leaders in three-point shooting, assists and scoring while rarely leaving the floor. He's gone a long way toward helping ASU replace second-team All-American Ike Diogu, an NBA lottery pick.
Diogu, last year's conference Player of the Year, is the latest in a long line of Sun Devils standouts that includes Lionel Hollins, Alton Lister, Lafayette Lever, Isaac Austin, Byron Scott and Eddie House.
The Sun Devils are building off of last year's success, when the won 18 games, swept Stanford for the first time since 1993-94, and won nine straight games for the first time since 1980-81. The Sun Devils were 18-9 heading into the final week of February but lost a tough 90-82 game at No. 13 Washington and then lost two games in the final seconds before falling to the eventual conference tournament champion, those same Washington Huskies. It was a bitter 95-90 overtime defeat.
Nevertheless, ASU advanced to the NIT. Evans' teams are always hard-nosed and hard-working, and he's establishing a winning tradition in Tempe. When he was hired in 1998 after leaving Ole Miss, he became the 12th coach of a program that began in the early 1900s.
Evans led the Sun Devils to a 20-win season in 2003 and an NCAA Tournament win over Memphis. It was just ASU's third NCAA berth in more than two decades, the most recent trip coming in 1995.
