The National Finals Rodeo (NFR) is the flagship event of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. It is the final event of the season and at its end, eight men are crowned champions in the event’s feature competitions: bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, and bull riding. Women also have the opportunity to earn the title of champion in the barrel racing event, the only event that is exclusive to female competitors. Winners are determined by the amount of money earned in an event for the year, with the highest earner being crowned the world champion of his or her event. The highest honor a cowboy or cowgirl can receive is the “all-around cowboy” award, which is given to the competitor who has earned the most money overall throughout the year. In order to receive this prestigious award, a cowboy must have competed regularly in more than one event over the course of the year.
Sponsored by Wrangler Jeans, the National Finals Rodeo is held each year during the first week of December at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. While the event is obviously a draw for tourists (over fifty thousand out-of-towners are expected to attend), the entire community of Las Vegas gets involved in the excitement. Many hotels and casinos feature the rodeo on live television for those individuals who were unable to score tickets to the event, and several establishments schedule country-themed shows and entertainment, giving their regular entertainers a much-needed vacation.
Adding to the draw of the National Finals Rodeo are the many sources of entertainment beyond the actual rodeo. For example, the Cowboy Christmas gift show allows spectators to get some Christmas shopping done while taking a break from the excitement of the competition. The Miss Rodeo America Pageant offers what some might consider a much better-looking form of entertainment. Finally, the National Finals Rodeo features some of the biggest names in country music, with the likes of past performers Reba McEntire, Charlie Daniels, and Randy Travis making appearances at the rodeo and throughout some of the hottest venues in Las Vegas.
